Carer's allowance and taking holidays

Hello does anyone have experience of how this works in practice please? I haven't yet submitted my claim for carer's allowance and this is the part I don't quite understand. I care for an elderly parent with whom I live.

What counts as a holiday? I never go abroad and have multiple monitoring and contingency plans for when I'm away from home in the UK. As well as some replacement care set up. I am always prepared to come straight home and have had to do this in the past. I never go away for as long as a week.

Absolutely fine for you to go on the occasional holiday.

you presumably will secure alternative care whilst you are on holiday and that will cost money

I have claimed carers over the years and never been asked about holidays, is this new?

I think if you go on holiday, you’d just let the DWP know and would lose the carers allowance for that week (or however long you’re away for). If it’s just a short break and you’re still caring for your parent for at least 35 hours that week then you don’t need to say anything.

It explains changes in circumstances (including temporary changes) here:

Carer's Allowance: report changes

Report changes in circumstances if you're claiming or have applied for Carer's Allowance - if you get a job, take a break from caring for someone, stop being a carer
