Hi all

i am a carer and I’ve recently had to resign from my full time job but I am struggling to find work that I can around being a carer.

Does any one have any suggestions on what kind of work that I could do while also caring?

What did you do before? A friend in a similar situation now does very specialist freelance writing, linked to her previous career.

I stayed in my full time job but requested to jobs share so that I could work part time. My DH then requested flexible working so he could work school hours on the days that I work.

Friends who have caring responsibilities have worked at schools, work freelance, and one friend retrained and now upcycles furniture which she and sells online and at special markets.

How many hours could you work without burning out and what time commitment does the caring responsibilities require, e.g. Do you need to be at home all day, at another location at certain times, be available for lots of appointments at random times?

If you are looking for flexibility then Local Authority admin work might be worth looking at. LAs should be supportive of employees who are carers and you may be able to choose to work either from home or in the office and to do a certain number of hours within a wider window of time e.g. 7 hours work between 7am and 7pm.

It depends how much care your charge needs. Providing I am fed and comfortable I can be left alone for a few hours, my husband works washing cars and transporters, Monday to Thursday, 4 hours in the late afternoon. Most of my hospital appointments are in the morning so he can take me to all of them and on the rare occasions they aren't his boss is flexible and understanding. Depending on how much care your charge needs, if they can be left and how flexible your employer will be. Be totally honest with any potential employer about your responsibilities at home. Don't wait to be offered the job before telling them, they won't appreciate being blindsided.
