Caring for elderly relatives? Supercarers can help

Any long distance carers out there managed to get a carers assessment?

Just that really.

I've been done over by the system in not being assessed for one family member and it was found a failing in their care by their local authority. I've since become a long distance carer for another relative, also out of area and am still up against the same hurdles - mainly buck passing as to who should provide a carers assessment.

Wondering if it's worth complaining to both authorities?

In my LA we provide carers assessments for carers where the carer for person lives in our area. Is there anything in particular you want from a carers assessment? As it may not be what you imagine, especially if you don’t live in the local area as they usually signpost to carers groups ect

As above, are you looking for carers support services or to claim carers allowance?

The local authority where the cared-for person lives should be the one doing the carer assessment, regardless of where you, the carer, live. But as others have stated, what they can help you with will be limited if you don't live near enough to take up the opportunities offered.

I'm not looking to claim carers allowance as it's not over 35 hours. But I am having to reduce my hours at work due to the impact of what I'm doing (lots more travel costs and used up all my leave, so now unpaid) I guess I just have to suck it up.
