Best diaper for adult for 11 hour flight

What's the most absorbent diaper for heavy wetting available in the uk, ideally over the counter? For a 80 year old lady who has to take a long-haul 11 hour flight- she can't use plane bathrooms and wants a diaper with tabs. No fecal matter hopefully just urine.

Are there any alternatives? It sounds an immensely uncomfortable situation for the woman involved, and possibly for surrounding passengers if things go wrong. I'd also be worried about a high risk of DVT for someone who isn't mobile enough to use the bathroom. Could the journey be broken?

I hope you find a solution.

PickledPurplePickle · 26/02/2024 09:12

Is there no way she can use the toilet on the plane?

that’s an awfully long time to be stuck in a potentially wet diaper / pants

Takoneko · 26/02/2024 09:17

As others have said 11 hours is far too long to be sat in a wet nappy, especially for someone of that age. They could end up with really bad sores. I’d also be really worried about DVTs if they aren’t getting up at all during a flight of that length.
Like others, I’d be looking at whether the journey could be broken into two shorter stints.

nc42day · 26/02/2024 09:19

Nobody should be sitting in their own pee for 11 hours, there is no adult nappy designed for this, and sitting in a plane seat in your own pee for 11 hours is not going to be good for her even if there was.

feathermucker · 26/02/2024 09:44

11 hours is FAR too long to be sat in urine. However good the absorbency is, skin integrity could be affected. Why can't she use the bathroom? Who disposes of the pad if she needs it changing?

Lalgarh · 26/02/2024 15:15

By the way does the airline know of this lady's condition? Has she got travel insurance in place that makes allowances for this? Id have nightmares trying to arrange this if for a particularly determined elderly person who wants to travel despite these conditions. You mentioned she can't use a plane toilet.

Does she use a wheelchair ? Would someone have to change her?

TraitorsGate · 26/02/2024 15:21

No pad is designed to last 11hrs, some people think doubling up works but it doesn't. Why can't she use the toilet, she needs an airline that offers accessible seating and assistance. What if she has a poo, she can't be left in soiled pads for her or other passengers. What trip is she planning, are there alternatives. How will she manage at the airports.

Skiphopbump · 26/02/2024 15:21

As already stated by others it’s far too long, you also have to factor in the time before and after flight to reach the changing facilities.

Have asked the airline whether there is an accessible toilet on the plane.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 26/02/2024 15:22

This does not sound feasible, OP, and potentially horrendous for her and other passengers.

Being crass, you say "hopefully" no fecal matter, but if she has to crap an hour into the flight, then what? She sits in shit for 10 hours and her seat neighbours get to inhale the aroma? Absolutely not.

There comes a point where commercial travel isn't an option. This may be it.

CrocusSnowdrop · 26/02/2024 15:24

There generally aren't any accessible toilets on planes, I don't know why this is a surprise to people. If they do have grab rails they're very very rarely big enough to allow two people in the cubicle. Wheelchair users who need assistance to use the toilets dehydrate themselves or use incontinence pads.

Edited

People do
I worked as a carer and people often had their last visit at 8pm and not back until 9am the next day

It's not ideal but....

There’s are more likely to be one in a long haul flight- wouldn’t expect one on short haul.

Just to note that a wet nappy will start to smell of ammonia if left unchanged, that would be unpleasant for any passengers near by.

Soontobe60 · 26/02/2024 15:32

In reality, someone taking an 11 hour flight will likely not have access to an accessible toilet for far longer than that. They may well be able to use one in the main part of the airport, but at the departure gates I dont think there are any, so you can easily add on an extra hour before the plane actually takes off. Plus the 11 hours in the air, then another 30 minutes to disembark and make your way to the arrivals hall. So 12 - 13 hours in total.
It would be much better for an elderly person to take 2 or even 3 shorter flights where they can change their pads much more readily.

Purplefrock · 26/02/2024 15:33

When DH was bed bound, "the system" felt it perfectly reasonable that he should sit in his own waste for 12+ hours a day. You need 2 people to change an immobile adult and 4 visits a day, with the last one at tea time and the first at breakfast are apparently perfectly reasonable.

Lalgarh · 26/02/2024 15:38

There are medical flights. That the only viable option if say the 11 hour flight is over the sea

amberedover1 · 26/02/2024 15:39

Agree ,many people receiving care at home face overnight periods of 11 hours with no change of incontinence product.

LittleMissSleepyUK · 26/02/2024 18:38

Would she be travelling alone or with someone?

Balloonhearts · 26/02/2024 19:01

That's way too long and not fair on other passengers either.

Lalgarh · 11/05/2024 12:44

I'm wondering how this worked out if any update @serviette

serviette · 11/05/2024 16:13

@lalgarh it went smoothly, thanks! I got Megamax diapers, OAP was incredibly cooperative and kept liquid intakes to a minimum before and during the flight. We had a quick change just before boarding and a quick change just after landing. Need to make the return flight now........

OP posts:
fungipie · 11/05/2024 16:21

Honestly, this person should not have to travel to visit family now. Family should be travelling to visit her. Why on earth impose such an exhausting journey on such a frail, old person. Limiting liquid intake is also dangerous.

serviette · 11/05/2024 16:24

@fungipie Some OAPs like to travel!

@fungipie Some OAPs like to travel!

Of course- but can't be very pleasant to travel in such conditions. But parents travelled well into their nineties, but only within Europe and 2 hrs flight, my mum with assistance.

11 hour flight in a nappy doesn't not sound like my idea of fun!
