Online shopping for elderly parent

Parent needs food shopping ordered online and delivered due to being housebound. I can order. However I live 3 hours away and they will struggle to transfer a delivery into their own bags/boxes on the doorstep when it’s delivered. Do any online shopping providers deliver in bags/boxes that can be left with customer (for gradually unpacking/unpacking when someone’s available to help?). Food deliveries seems the logical solution but not sure how it will work in practice. Does the delivery person provide extra support where someone is vulnerable?

I’m not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but I believe Wiltshire Farm Foods will put the food in the freezer for you.

We get Asda delivery. It comes unbagged in crates which we unpack in kitchen and return to driver. Not sure if there is any other service for disabled people etc

I believe Ocado still uses bags and will carry them into the kitchen if needed. So if they’re available in their area, it might be worth a look.

Morrisons deliver in carry bags which they can unpack at their own pace. You can return the bags next time

I get deliveries for my mum from asda and on the instructions I put exactly which door they have to go to and have said it is an elderly person who will take time to unpack. My mum didn't appreciate me saying she was elderly but I know what some delivery drivers can be like. She has only had one grumpy driver before who criticised my description of where the door is. They are generally really helpful and will help her unpack.

Assuming she lives alone? My mum has carers visiting 3 times a day. Tesco and carer seem to have coordinated a regular time between them

We get Sainsbury’s deliveries every week for my grandmother. The delivery drivers bring in her shopping in crates and place them on her kitchen worktop / table for her. If she’s got something very heavy they will put it where she asks them to. They leave her with the crates and she gives them back the next week. She then puts things away at her own pace.

She has the same slot on the same day every week which might help, but we have detailed instructions saved in the delivery note for each delivery.

I think most supermarkets give the option of bags or no bags. Waitrose certainly does. With bags costs a little more. And they will literally lift the bags over the threshold into the house.

Then you just need to co-ordinate shopping deliveries with when a carer is there to help put things away.

Ocado delivers in bags. When they come next you hand back the bags from the previous delivery.

Amazon Fresh delivers in paper bags. They are quite large though so could be difficult for an elderly person to carry or partially empty.

Waitrose no longer offer bags here and unpacking the crates always feels a bit pressured.

Ocado, as others have said, bring everything in bags and will carry them through to the kitchen. The other helpful aspect is that the bags are colour coded (freezer, fridge, neither) so it’s easy to see which need unpacking first.

CMOTDibbler · 11/09/2023 15:24

I always used Ocado for my parents - it comes in colour coded labelled bags, they carry it into the kitchen, and they'd even pop the freezer/ fridge stuff away. I used to pop a note to say that the delivery was for a frail customer
