What counts as 'caring' for CA?

I have ms and get PIP. My dh wants to claim CA, but we are discussing whether he is actually entitled to it.

What things count as caring?
Hoovering, shopping, cooking, etc? All of which he does, and some of which I do - neither of us do all of it all the time.

I know personal care counts, and driving me to hospital appts etc. That's stuff he wouldn't have to do if I weren't around or lived elewhere. Would you say that's the rule of thumb?

As you live together and you get PIP That's enough to qualify him for the benefit I've never been asked how I care for my dd. If you don't work you can get a benefit top up if you don't have a carer but as you live with your dh I don't think you would get that and the benefits office would tell him to apply

Thank you, MumUnderTheMoon, that's helpful.

Does your DH work/recieve a pension because if he earns over a certain amount he won't qualify.

blessedmummyov5 · 22/01/2019 22:23

As long as he doing over 35 hours a week off helping u u will qualify

blessedmummyov5 · 22/01/2019 22:26

As above he needs to earn under £120 a week to get it plus if ur in Scotland he gets extra payment every 6 months

gamerchick · 22/01/2019 22:26

How much does he earn outside the home?

Jux · 04/03/2019 12:14

gamerchick, our basement is converted and we get about 10k a year in rent, we haven't had a full year for a while. The tenant before our current one disappeared owing us quite a lot and stole all the kitchen equipment and some other stuff.

He puts the full amount of rent we receive on his tax return, but in reality we have equal access so we could declare it as 5k each (or part thereof).

He has done more recently to 'help' me, like hoovering, which I haven't been able to do since he bought a Henry 10years ago (too heavy for me, I can do about 1sq yd and then I'm done in for the day). He cooks about as much as I do, washes up more often than I do, does heavy lifting when needed, gets my scooter ramp in and out, and often my scooter too. He doesn't really help with my personal care as atm I would rather try to do it myself. He does all the driving.

blessedmummy, so if he does the hoovering that counts as carine for me? Thisis what confuses me about it. Why would hoovering count towards getting CA? He'd presumably be hoovering anyway; if he gets CA for that why isn't everyone getting paid for hoovering?

If he takes you to the pub and has a couple of drinks with you it counts.

Getting you a glass of water to help you take pills counts.

Accompanying you to the cinema counts.

Jux

You are not able to vacuum so him doing it is 'caring'. If you lived separately he would have to do his own and then come round and do yours because you can't. Just because he lives there doesn't suddenly make you able to do things.

Jux · 04/03/2019 13:10

sassh, I see; I've been thinking of it the wrong way round. Thank you, that is really, really helpful.

I'm in the same situation OP,
I have MS and receive PIP & ESA.
I don't know what is classed as caring, is it going for prescription, shopping if I can't go or he accompanies me, doing all DIY and bits and bats, fixing things.
I'm so confused with the benefits I get, I'm waiting for an appeal with ESA that might result in a number of years backpay.
How strict is CA, will someone be grilled like a PIP or ESA assessment?

breadzeb · 08/04/2019 01:31

Don't worry about it, you don't have to specify what he does on the form. Just that he does.

You fill in the form, can be done online, and often they just pay it. Self employed people have to fill out an income sheet thing but there is no meeting or questions about what the carer does.
