i sort my mil tablets into dosset boxes-mon to fri, evening and morning.her carers go in 4 times a day and give her the tablets.twice now theyve messed up and given her evening tablets in morning(although clearly labelled in big black letters).so shes had wrong tablets-including a sleeping tablet.im waiting to speak to gp.phoned agency to complain and make then aware of the situation.woman wants to meet me at 2.30 to 'discuss' it.shes blaming me.apparently if they were in blister packs it wouldnt happen, but after speaking to chemist theyve said blister packs would be same.morning and night.she has 6 children.3 live near with there wifes/husbands but no one is willing to come to meeting.no idea why im typing this but just......gggrrr

We use blister packs at work and you cant mess them up so not sure what chemist means. Pink plastic background for the day and blue for night, and Boots do it all for free so all checked and rechecked. Hope your meeting goes well. Am glad you have complained about the carer though. Maybe others have too and they can retrain her

oh what a pain! i am so glad that dh can self medicate.

kittypants · 16/05/2007 10:37

crazyladydaisy.but surely colour coding isnt that much easier/harder than reading 'morning','night'.the meeting went well.lady was ok,probably because dh ended up sat in front room with his mum,so she wasnt rude!she gave some more dosset boxes that are same as ours but also have lunch and dinner.dont know what difference that makes but.....
she apologiesed on behalf of carers that messed up tablets and said there was no excuse.so went well in end.just hope it doesnt happen again

Yes, i see your point Kittypants - its just that if your chemist does it then it doesnt come back on YOU personally if she doesnt give the right med. They also print out sheets (Mars sheets) where you have to sign for each individual tablet so you sign as you go along. Dont know if your MIL's carers have that. Mistakes are still made though, unfortunately, but pretty rare. HTH and glad meeting was positive

I work for a company that sets people with mental health problems up in their own homes - some have been in hospitals since they were toddlers . They now have choices in life and it's hard for them to adjust so need support.
I work a few shifts as want to keep my hand in and not be forgotten!

kittypants · 17/05/2007 14:08

sounds like a rewarding job!

Dossette Boxes are pretty much the same as blister packs, but i would still have the blister packs done, one less thing for you to worry about.
As for the Mars sheets not all agency's are trained in using these. So obv dont use them.
Glad the meeting went well xx

I got a call re my mum's medication last week. She'd stated panicking about it and questioning when she have it etc etc. I'd been putting in daily boxes, marked 1,2,3,4 and left a list as well.

Several times I found the smallest tablet on the floor when I visited, or the wrong chamber of the boxes empty. I left a note for tha carers and got a call from their manager, who asked for the blister packs 'as it stops people trying to kill their mothers'!!

District nurse stepped in and has sorted the blister packs; I've got shingles so can't visit and hope it's all going well. At least they won't have to worry about my matricidal tendencies this week!!

Another benefit of blister packs is if that if they get dropped the pills are sealed inside, they won't fall out and poss get muddled. Plus the caree can't fiddle with them without being detected.

Our local chemist has been making up NOMAD packs for MIL and FIL since carers kept giving them each others tablets, and we couldn't keep on top of them.
Each week the pack is delivered, each day has 4 blisters, and each blister is labelled with the time of day.
The packs are clearly labelled as to whether it is MIL or FIL tablets, and we have only had difficulties when there has been a change in medication, as it seems the pharmacy makes them up in 4 week blocks and delivers one week at a time.

Araldia · 01/04/2008 17:43

We also had to put in a locked medicine cabinet, as carers tried blaming FIL (dementia) for "grabbing the tablets belonging to his wife and taking them before the carer could stop him".
