Lie flat car seats, anyone have on?

Hi,

I am about to become a 1st time mum and am getting awfully confused about new born car seats. I have read that for at least the first 4 months babies shouldn't be in a car seat for more than 1 hour at a time and no more than 2 hours a day. As I live in London with immediate family in Yorkshire, Devon, and Cumbria this is impossible.
I was reading this morning however about jane lie flat car seats that allow the baby to be breath better and therefore extend the amount of travel time. I am just a little concerned about the side facing position and harnassing. Does anyone have any experience of these type of seats? Or know of any alternatives.

Have a look at the Baby Safe sleeper this is a lie flat car seat which can also be used as a carrycot on the Britax S Mart and B Dual. This has scored highly safety wise and is a Which Best Buy.

Thank you so much!! I will continue my research but think that I will end up with a normal rear facing seat, and beat myself up every journey because s/he has been in it for more than 2 hours.

We used the Jane Matrix lie-flat for DD and would use again. All the research we did at the time (four years ago) assured us of the safety of the seat.

We have the Britax baby-safe sleeper. I love it so far

We have the Baby Safe Sleeper too, and we also love it so far.

OP, I will try and sum up our experiences as quickly as possible, but I apologise if this rambles... We also have far away family, and are planning an abroad holiday in the summer, so the Sleeper was our top choice, for the reasons you have.

It goes over two seats in the back, and clips at either end to the seatbelts. The carry handle forms a roll cage so it can't tip over in case of sudden braking or front/rear impact.

It is a bit fiddly to fit the clips onto the seatbelts, but you only have to do that once. It also takes about a minute longer to clip it in each time you use the car. The way we see it though, is that everything takes longer with a newborn, so a minute extra getting into the car is neither here nor there

It fits on the B Smart/Vigour chassis, which is so easy to manouver (sp?) and put up and down, so we're really happy with that too!

The other thing is that it only lasts until 6mths/10kg, so I'm already starting to think about the next seat up. It only delays getting a rear facing seat - it doesn't replace it. I might get a Britax First Class, which will rear face until DD is big enough to forward face, or might enough look into a rearfacing til 4 seat. But that's a conversation for another thread.

Hope that helps. Good luck with making a decision. Holler if you have any other questions!

Using a baby sleeper is a large step down in safety compared to a regular rear facing seat. It's mostly used with preemies or in other special needs situations. It's really a seat which should be used as a last resort.

There are no problems with occasionally keeping a newborn in a rear facing seat for a little longer period of time. Take frequent breaks and things will be fine.

The research done previously on this subject has led to much misleading information. It would of course not be good to keep a newborn 6 hours every day in a car seat. But keeping your baby there for a few hours every now and then is not an issue.

I've got one of those too- I think it's made by BeSafe - and they also have a base it clips into in the car.. It's fairly heavy, but fits into cabriofix fittings and so can easily be transfered from the base to a bugaboo or quinny zapp etc great seat, and very safe (rearfacing) when in the car, but turns to lie flat when on the pushchair If anyone wants to play with one - give me a shout- I'm in Devon

mamjo · 14/06/2010 09:41

Thanks to all of you for taking the time give me your thoughts.

This is the 1st decision that I am trying to make about the 1st purchase - I hope that they aren't all this difficult.

so how long can your baby be in this lie flat car seat then? just curious as to whether it's value for money or not...

MadameCastafiore · 20/06/2010 15:55

I can't see how a baby can be secured adequately in the actual lie flat thing - surely the force would be all from one side which would be dangerous in an accident?
