Car seats for aeroplanes and hire cars

Can anyone recommend a car seat that they have used on both an aeroplane and a hire car? We are flying BA to Italy. Child is 15 months old and has his own seat on the plane but they are saying he needs a car seat…

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

There’s a list online, includes joie stages, must be forward facing and right width

Sit him on your lap on the plane & can you use public transport in Italy? Would save the car seat hassle

Thanks! I’ll have a look! He’s a massive wriggler and heavy, and we are going to the middle of nowhere so need a car unfortunately!!

Just have him on your lap for the off and landing and then use the seat that you’ve bought for him during the flight.

Check in a car seat for use in your hire car.

Difficulty you've got us that the aircraft approved car seats are probably forward facing while, in the car, he'll need to be rear facing. Surprised BA have said he must be in a car seat - it's usual for under 2s to sit on an adult's lap during take-off and landing.

" Surprised BA have said he must be in a car seat "

It's the separate seat for the infant that's the problem.

The <2 year old could sit on an adults lap, restrained by an extension seat belt the whole flight, that would be OK.

However if the plan is to plonk them in their own separate seat for the cruise then as far as BA are concerned the adult belt as fitted to the seat won't be adequate if restraint is needed.

From ba.com, travelling with family:

"If you have booked a separate seat for your infant (under 24 months) to travel as a child, you must bring either a child car seat that complies with the airline safety requirements listed below, or an AmSafe system that attaches to the aircraft seat for your baby to sit in during the flight.
If the car seat does not meet the safety requirements, it can still be used, but your infant (under 24 months) must sit on your lap using an extension seat belt during taxi, take off, landing and turbulence. The cabin crew will provide the extension seat belt and show you how to use it when you board the flight." (My emphasis).
