Car seat for 2 point seatbelt

Has anyone ever found a car seats for 2 and 4 year olds that would be suitable for a bus with 2 point seatbelts? I.e. a seatbelt that goes across the lap and bit the shoulder.

Usually they are held in place with a two point seatbelt and have their own 5 point harness then, my kids have all been in ones like that until 4 or over. The same seat actually, but from around 4 we stopped using the 5 point harness and used it in the two point seatbelt configuration. Do you mean other than isofix ones?

Some of the older ERF seats can be fitted that way - Britax Hi-Way, Max Way or Two Way Elite. However they are no longer sold so would be tricky to get hold of and you might need to rely on older stock or second hand. They also need to be tethered and use a support leg, or the TWE rests (braces) on the seat in front or dashboard.

Some US regulation seats can be used with lap belt only however the forward rotation on them is terrible unless top tether is also used, which could be a problem if the bus seats are close together. Depending on the scenario I am not sure whether top tether anchor points would be available or reliable.

Can you give more context about the situation - is this an older private vehicle, or a coach/bus for school transport or travel? Are you in the UK or in another country, possibly a developing country? How often and how long is this vehicle likely to be used?

And are they static, adjustable lap belts (like on a plane where you make it the right length) or are they on a reel like lap-shoulder belts, where they only lock when pulled sharply, and try to self-adjust by pulling back into the reel?

What you are calling a "two point seatbelt" is called a three point belt - this is the standard seatbelt type in every car.

A two point belt in OP's context = just a lap belt. Like on an aeroplane or in the middle seat of cars before the late 00s. Rarely seen in private cars these days.

I did re-read it to make sure but the OP mentioned across the lap and about the shoulder bit, but now I’m thinking instead of “bit” she meant not?

Yes that's exactly the typo I assumed 🙂 Very common typo on a phone.

MrsNoisyFeet · 04/12/2025 22:15

Oh yes, sorry that was a typo! I meant the belt does "not" go across the shoulder. It's a seatbelt like in an aeroplane.
For context, I am asking this because we are going on a ski holiday and the bus that transfers us from the airport to the hotel only has 2 point seatbelts.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond.

For that scenario I would sit the 2yo on an adults lap, and the 4yo on their own seat with a seat belt.

Don't share a seatbelt with the 2yo. It's more dangerous than holding them in your arms.

TBH I expect you will be the only people wearing seatbelts in the whole bus. Most people don't bother. If a bus crashes, the relative mass of it means the force transferred to passengers is fairly low. Try not to worry, and have a lovely holiday!

Back in the early 2000s Britax made seats which could be used with a lap belt (we had a couple of Britax Renaissance seats and occasionally used them with a lap belt if we had 4 adults and a toddler in the car) but the middle seat has a 3 point belt in all modern cars so the ability to fit with a lap belt only isn't needed.

Perhaps travel carseat like the maxi cosi nomad or cosatto on the go.
They’re designed to be able to use them in a plane as well as in car so I would you must be able to fit them with a lap belt
