We are looking to buy a car seat chiefly for our thin , tall, 2 1/2year old DGD .We are currently swapping seats and it would be much more convenient to semi permanently have a car seat to take her out spontaneously. We have isofix fixings. She is currently rear facing but there is a suspicion that she gets car sick so it may be that she forward faces before too long. We occasionally need a seat for another DGD aged one who is quite short and round so adaptability for her would be ideal. We currently use a simple baby seat for the little one but she will probably outgrow this in the next few months.
obviously safety is number one priority but I would be very interested to know which seat might suit best. I am not set on a spin function but as I mentioned above using the seat forward facing might be needed before too long. Thank you for your experienced advice.

What seat is she currently using? Those seats are largely (maybe all) rear facing only, often up to 125cm in height. That said, they are excellent, extremely safe seats, and would definitely fit both DGD for a good amount of time.

Some of them can be installed quite upright. We have an older model of the MiniKid, and my sickness-prone second got on much better with it than more reclined seats.

Axkid Minikid 4 Pro is on Black Friday offer for about £300 - would this be too expensive? It is rear facing so would suit the younger but would fit the older one up to 125cm, which is about 7yo even for a tall child. It's safe for them to stay rear facing up to this age as long as the seat is designed for it, which this one is. I am not sure if this has the same self-adjusting headrest that the older Minikids have - that would be the ideal in not needing to readjust any settings. If you like the sound of that, Minikid 2 has it if you can still find stock anywhere - that was about £225 I think at the end of sales.

Avionaut Stardust might also be worth looking at - this is rear facing up to 125cm again or can be used forward facing with harness up to 105cm. So your older granddaughter could use it rear facing as long as needed. If she does change to forward facing at some point she could use the harness for a while, the only issue would be if she goes over the 105cm but isn't ready for an adult seatbelt - she might need to temporarily turn backwards again.

Otherwise perhaps Britax Dualfix M Plus or Cybex Sirona Gi i-size would probably fit both children for a good while yet, can be rear facing or forward facing, use up to 105cm/20kg. If at some point in the future, the older GD ends up surpassing the 105cm limit, look at an extended harness seat such as Joie i-Irvana Max (there will likely be more choice by then, anyway).

Or Britax Swivel might be a good option. I am not usually keen on these combination seats, but the top harness height is a good bit higher than the Dualfix and it might work well once the older GC gets to needing a seatbelt and the younger one doesn't yet.
