Is the Joie spin 360™ suitable for newborns

A friend has recommended the Joie spin 360 to use from newborn to 4yrs. We are expecting twins and don't want to purchase another set of seats when they get a little bigger but is the Joie spin 360 suitable for newborns? Does it offer enough support?

We have it in my parents car and i would say not. We probably got a good fit from about 6months onwards? DD1 was little which made it even worse, but presumably if you having twins, they are likely to be on the smaller side as well? I'd really recommend Avianaut pixel pro infant carrier, or the cheaper version of Avianaut Cosmo instead. They just belt in although you can buy an extra spin base if you want to. We managed fine with just using the seatbelt. You'll probably get a good 12-18months use out of them and then you can upgrade to a seat that stays in the car - if you go for 25kg / 36kg seat, it will last you until they are probably 7yrs so you'll get loads of use.

I'm on the car seat FB group Bump to Boosters, and if you wanted to just buy one seat, the one that seems to get recommended a lot from newborn is the Avianaut Sky and it goes up to 125cm / 25kg. So you could look at that one? It does look cosy from pics that others have put in the group.

We had a joie 360 spin from when DS was about a year old so I can't comment about whether it is suitable for newborns. It was a great seat for a toddler though.

I would say that having a seat you can lift out without removing them is helpful when they are little as they are often asleep in them. Of course you may have lovely sleepers who nap anywhere and sleep through the night and you aren't worried about waking them up. Alternatively you could have babies that you don't dare wake once they are actually bloody asleep because they are such a nightmare (guess which type I got!)

It depends on your baby but DD although full term was teeny and far too floppy for it. We had one from about 12 months and it was a good seat then but not for my little one at birth (6lb 10 but skinny).

We have it, both my kids were 6lbers and neither of them fit in it til they were a few months old. If you’re expecting twins then they’re likely to be smaller. We were given a carry handle car seat which we used in the earlier days

BakeOffRewatch · 10/07/2025 22:04

My 3kg was fine with the infant insert

Twins are usually out early so likely to be smaller. Can you borrow newborn seats from friends for a couple of months? Congratulations!

Awobabobob · 10/07/2025 22:08

I found that my babies head slumped forward in it. It’s great from about 4 - 6 months onward

Yes and no.

Technically you can use it from newborn. Out of all of the 360 type seats available in about 2020, I found it the second best one for newborns (Besafe izi Turn or izi Twist is fantastic but quite a bit more expensive).

However, twins tend to be smaller than average and am I right in saying they are more likely to be premature? In this case you might not find it the best option. You have to be fairly confident in fitting babies into car seats to get a good fit for a newborn in this seat. The straps will absolutely drown them. The fit won't be good until probably about 4-6 weeks minimum. If they are smaller than average it might even be poor. The slope in your car can also make a big difference as to whether the angle is reclined enough for a newborn.

You may also want to consider whether you need a seat which can be removed from the car with the baby in it. I found this helpful when we had two children 3 years apart because it meant one of us didn't get stuck waiting in the car if the baby was asleep, and it was also handy for appointments where we had to navigate stairs, waiting rooms etc - I don't know if you tend to have more appointments for twins? Although it's not great to keep babies in car seats for long periods, it's very handy to have a portable sort of carrying thing that you can put down, click into a pushchair etc before the baby has the ability to stand on their own two feet. I didn't find it a big problem to stick to the recommended time limits as I just took the baby out for a cuddle when they woke up anyway.

If it's likely that you will drive them home from hospital and then very little until they are older, it might be a reasonable option but if you're likely to have a lot of driving with young babies it might make sense to look at either a fixed seat with a more supportive seating position, or a cheap infant carrier or a long lasting infant carrier so you can keep the benefit of the portable type seats for as long as possible and only change to the next stage when this is fully outgrown, at which point you don't then need a seat which is suitable from birth.

Supportive position fixed seat - Besafe izi Turn/Twist, Besafe Stretch, Avionaut Sky, Avionaut Stardust, Axkid One+ - all more expensive but some do last longer than the Joie 360 Spin.

Cheap infant carrier - Graco SnugLite seems to fit with universal pram adapters and is £70. Or Joie i-Juva/Hauck Comfort Fix are £50/60 (£100 with base) if you don't need pram compatability.

Long lasting infant carrier - Britax Baby-Safe Core / Avionaut Cosmo / Cybex Cloud.

Worth knowing also - the Graco Turn2me i-size is currently £129 in Halfords and is basically the same seat as the Joie 360 (Graco and Joie share a parent company) so you could save on that if you wanted to get something else initially and get the 360 seat for later.

You might want to also post in the multiples forum so you can get experiences from actual twin parents - I know about car seats, but not about the practicalities of parenting twins Smile

We used it from birth to 4. There's extra inserts for little babies. I would recommend!

Or you have the type of baby who sleeps in the car, stays asleep while you move the car seat to house and put it down and wakes up about 5 minutes later anyway! If I want to keep him asleep in the car seat I just stay in the car with him these days.

We love ours but until approx 6months old our baby had terrible terrible head flop and looking back no it wasn’t safe and it wasn’t OK. We just didnt know as much back then. With our second we started with an infant carrier until 18months (so handy especially for a second child) and then moved them into the Joie Ispin 360 and has been fab. They will stay in there until 4 and then will get another extended rear facing seat. Yea it’s more expensive to have to buy multiple but it’s for the best in terms of fit and safety (and comfort and ease of use too). Also if you have more than one kid remember you can re-use

I’m just moving my nearly 4 year old out of it now. I would start off with carriers, I had a cabriofix that I used until she was well over 1 that was much easier to take in and out of houses and was useful for flying with / taxis later (i ocassionally it until she was nearly 2) as it didn’t have to be isofix. The ispin is in no way portable and a struggle to move between cars so having carriers potentially also gives you options if you need to use a different car for some reason.

i would agree that I don’t think they give newborns a good fit. The hospital is also likely to be unhappy about discharging newborns unless they see them in something, so you would need a pram to get off the ward!
