Hi,

Can anyone please suggest a rear facing car seat for holidays for a low centile two years old? Ideally one that can be secured with the seat belt.

Thanks

We brought a axkid minikid for travel at two years old and still using now at 5 years old. But we are only unloading it in the airport and into a hire car the other side as it's heavy. We keep it in the box it came in and take tape and scissors to retape it or if we have to flat pack the box to fit in the car.
Not the cheapest of seats but will hopefully last us until high back booster seat stage and it now gets used in a second car we brought last year.

Isofix only but is a travel seat but expensive.

Thanks so much for the replies!

Thanks for explaining the difference between the Joie models, super helpful.

Thanks, the axkid looks great but I'm really keen to have one that can also be afixed with a belt.

Britax Maxway whatever the newest model is called. Maxway pro maybe?
Fits with a belt, pole on the footwell and tethers to the ground/front seat. Can be used from around 9months until I think 125cm or 36kg (previous version was until a lower height and 25kg or something like that).

@rainbowsparkle28 am I right in thinking that once we eventually get to booster seat age I can probably get a good travel one that's lighter than the Joie stages?

Britax MaxSafe Pro in fact.

Hi OP,
With a low centile child, you have lots of options.
If you’re just looking for a belt fitted seat then Joie Stages or Steadi would be good. The Joie Tilt mentioned above is outgrown very early so may not last you very long.
If you’re open to lower tethers and you can find one I’d have a look a Axkid Minikid 2.
When they are ready for a HBB, these are much lighter, and you can purchase foldable ones that are really light for travelling.

Apologies, forgot to add: Britax MaxSafe Pro would be cheaper than the Axkid, but much more bulky and can compromise space in the front seat, especially in a smaller car.

Yes, but for a low centile child you might be waiting longer than you'd hope. The minimum size and weight for a high back booster is 15kg and 100cm - look on their lines to see when they are likely to get there.

As well as the Joie options you could look at Graco Extend, and Halfords actually have a really inexpensive, rear facing only seat up to 105cm called Impala. I would try it out in store to see how much growing room LO has, but it looks very good for the price.

I've not used a tethered seat myself, I'd be anxious about doing this in a taxi - has anyone done it?

CarSeatAdvicePlease · 14/04/2025 11:54

Thanks so much for the advice,

Yes I'm a little nervous about using tethers in a taxi too - hence wanting a belt only one.

Price is thankfully not too much of a consideration - just want to make sure it's really safe as we might be going to some off the beaten path counties.

He's 20th centile for weight and 1st centile for height so not too concerned about it being outgrown

Yes but as someone else has said at the time you are moving to high back booster make sure they are big enough and ready to use a high back booster particularly as your child is on the lower range of centiles, but for the moment a seat to 18kg should be suitable for a little while.

Lavender2021 · 14/04/2025 15:32

Belt fitted would be best for taxis. I would practice lots at home if possible so you can do it quickly. If you buy the joie Google the short belt way just incase.

BertieBotts · 14/04/2025 15:37

If it's rear facing that is all the safety feature you need, apparently. Doesn't matter which seat it is as long as it passes some recognised safety standard.

Have you come across Nachfolger? You might want the World version as it has the option then to use top tether if available and if top tether is not available, you can brace the seat instead (preferably on the car dashboard).

CarSeatAdvicePlease · 14/04/2025 18:45

Thanks, yes he'll be rear facing until he's maxed it out (or turns 18 😂 )

Thanks for the tip about looking up the short the seat belt method in advance

I can recommend the Joie steadi. I just fitted a Britax car seat with tethers in my own car and would 100% not do this in a taxi. Haven’t even finished the job a week later!

There is also a very similar seat called graco extend that weighs less than the steadi is r129 and cheaper. Looks identical. Seatbelt is very easy to fit on and you could do in 2 mins in a taxi.
