which car seat for an Egg 2?

Hi all,

I've purchased an Egg2 travel system (wife's choice) and I am looking at car seats for it. Can someone suggest one that will fit it and that has the longest age range (im confused by some that are only suitable up to 15 months, some up to 4 years, and some up to 12 years of age)

I'd like a car seat that will fit on the Egg 2 system. We do have 2 cars though, so if it is a case where these up to 12 years old seats aren't travel system compatible, I'm still open to suggestions on them as I would probably leave this permanently fixed in my car and the travel system friendly one in the wifes car.

sorry, total newbie to this!

thanks,

Stephen

The cyber t cloud infant carrier will fit on this, and is a reputable car seat carrier in terms of safety

Don’t know, I just know the seat my sister used for my nephew

Only the young carrier type will be travel system compatible. Generally that’s the 0-15/18 months type

The 0-4, or 12 stay in car fixed and aren’t removable.

Hi OP,
So most infant carriers will fit using universal adapters. If you’re looking for longevity with an infant carrier you need to look for one with a reasonable height limit, as some are outgrown at 75cm, which if you have a long/tall baby, could be sooner than you’d like.

One of the best infant carriers in the market is the Avionaut Pixel Pro. It has great positioning for tiny newborns, and has height limit of 86cm. It’s also super light so easier to carry with a growing infant. The Avionaut Cosmo is slightly cheaper and slightly heavier, but still offers a great fit for newborns. You can belt both these seats in, although you can purchase an isofix base for them.

Be wary of seats that claim to go from newborn to 12 years. These seats are trying to cover too many stages and there will often be compromises on safety and fit somewhere. You ideally want to keep your child rear facing until at least 4, but there are dedicated ERF seats that allow for rear facing for longer (7 years +). You should only need to buy three seats: infant carrier, harnessed (ideally rear facing) seat, then a high back booster until they get a safe fit with the adult belt without the booster.

I’d suggest sticking to one infant carrier, and then use the savings from a second seat towards purchasing a long lasting rear facing harnessed seat when they outgrow the infant carrier.

One final thing, please be aware that when baby is super small, you need to be mindful about the length of time they spend in the infant carrier. They ideally should be in it for as short a period as possible, especially in the first 6 weeks. But I appreciate that it’s super easy to lift them from the car in their seat and onto the pram.

Silver Cross Dream no - that's only Silver Cross compatible.

Generally, ignore the ages they say they go up to and look at type of seat. The type of seat you need for a travel system is an infant carrier. It will usually say it's suitable from birth up to usually 12-18 months or so, I think Cybex say 2 years, and the other way you can identify them is they have a carry handle (hence "infant carrier")

Egg do a car seat of their own called the Shell. That's worth a look if you like the matching look with the fabrics.

Otherwise it will take most of the popular brands - Cybex, Maxi Cosi, Britax, Besafe. Joie fit the same connectors (apart from Juva) if you want a more budget friendly model. Avionaut also go onto the same connectors and their infant inserts are especially good.

In terms of the ages they say they go up to, you get a range between 12 months and 24 months. In practice, ignore this because the amount of time you can use it actually depends on three things-

  • What's the height limit. If it's 75cm then the seat is unlikely to last all the way to 12 months. If you're expecting an especially big/tall baby it might even be outgrown by 6 months or so.
  • A height limit of 80cm+ should get you past a year but it doesn't really make much difference if it's 83/85/87cm - it's more likely you'll reach the physical limit of the seat first.
  • How long is the shell - you have to stop using an infant carrier once the baby's head gets to the top of the seat. If you really want the longest lasting seat, take a tape measure and measure all the seats in the shop.
  • When you get fed up of carrying the heavy lump of a baby which normally happens by the time they get to about 9kg (about 9 months). OR when they can stand up independently (which means there's less value in being able to place the seat on the floor) OR when they get fed up of lying in a reclined position and want to sit up and see out of the window.
In reality a lot of people change to the next stage of car seat by the time their baby is about 9-10 months old, sometimes if they get the rotating base, keep it until about 18 months, so to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't go all out spending a huge amount of money on this seat. There are some scenarios you might want to keep this type of seat for as long as possible e.g. when you don't have your own car. But for most people this doesn't apply.

The next type (fixed in the car, with integrated 5-point harness) is suitable from approx 6 months and lasts until ~4 years or ~7 years whichever type you have and you can't "skip" this type even if you have the biggest possible infant carrier because they will still be too young/small to go into a high back booster with adult seatbelt.
