ERF rotating car seat for a taller LO

WasitacatisaW · 24/04/2024 22:14

My 2 year old DS is tall, I need to measure him again but back in Nov he was 82cm. He was (is) on the 99th centile for height and 25th for weight.

I am looking at the Axkid Spin Kid, izi turn i-size and Britax Dual Fix Plus. I would need a seat that rotates because it would be near impossible to put him in if he's having a tantrum. Any ideas on the best seat for a taller child?

What seat is he in at the moment? 82cm doesn't sound that tall for a 2yo, though I realise he might not have yet been 2 last November! I am wondering whether he is in an infant carrier currently or he is already in a next-stage seat and you're looking ahead in case he outgrows it early.

I would say if you can wait, look at the Besafe Beyond system, but it won't be out in the UK until at least the autumn possibly 2025. The problem is that all other spin systems max out at 105cm.

If he's more long bodied and doesn't have the total height too tall, or you're comfortable with going over R129 height limits, Britax Swivel has a very tall back length, it's just that the harnessed mode is limited to 105cm.

If you don't want to go over a stated limit, Joie 360 Spin (Graco Turn2Me) are the seats with the highest backrest/shoulder height without the R129 height restriction. Can be used up to 18kg regardless of height. DC tend to fit into it until roughly 110cm standing height.

TheOneWithUnagi · 25/04/2024 20:18

I find my axkid minikid much easier to get a child into than our joie 360. It doesn't sit as high, and once they can climb in themselves it's even easier too (we had the spin in one car and the axkid in the other).

We have a high centile girl and she's outgrown the spin seat before 3.5years old.

May be worth looking at them to see if you have somewhere you can see them in person.

Howisitnotobvious · 25/04/2024 20:19

Have you done the search at car seat safety UK? I think that's the website that promotes ERF.

BertieBotts · 26/04/2024 11:22

Yes good point - ERF seats with low sides like the Minikid can also be fine to get DC into while they are having a tantrum (if you can't wait the tantrum out). In fact, the fact a spin seat moves can sometimes be a problem. Tethered ERF seats are very solid and should not move around. And these last much longer for tall children.

NameChange30 · 26/04/2024 11:35

I wouldn't recommend a spin seat, especially not for a tall child. It would be much better to buy a non-spinning ERF seat with a 25kg weight limit, it will last much longer. I do have a spin seat but tbh as the child gets taller and heavier it's more of a faff than anything. I have much preferred our 25kg seat (Britax Max Way Plus, although you can't buy it any more sadly) because although it doesn't spin it's easy to get the child in and out. Even uncooperative threenagers!

NameChange30 · 26/04/2024 11:50

The Britax Safe Way M is only £279 atm and it's suitable up to 125cm / 36kg.

You could also look at the Avionaut Sky Q, Axkid Move or Minikid. They are more expensive but with the bank holidays coming up, there might be more discounts and offers.

BertieBotts · 26/04/2024 11:51

Not Avionaut Sky for a tall child. The harness only goes up as high as a 105cm limit seat.

Oh sorry, I stand corrected! In that case they really shouldn't advertise is as being suitable up to 125cm Angry

NameChange30 · 26/04/2024 12:02

Also I've just realised the Axkid Move is only £219 atm Shock Bargain!

It is suitable for children up to 125cm, but it has a very short shell. So fine if your child carries their height in their legs, but outgrown sooner if they are tall through their torso. Essentially there’s better ERF seats for tall kids: Minikid 4, Safeway M

WasitacatisaW · 26/04/2024 18:01

So the consensus is not to get a rotating seat! My son is 92cm and he's 24 months. I am ashamed to say what he is in now... it's the Cybex Cloud Z. I've been looking for a seat for around 6 months and I easily get overwhelmed. I think I will look at the Minikid, I hope it has a long(?) shell.

How much does he weigh?
I think he's already over the height limit for the seat you have, but Bertie is the expert.
At this point you just need to buy a new seat! Is there a specialist car seat retailer near you? Somewhere that stocks Axkid and Britax?

BertieBotts · 26/04/2024 19:35

92cm or 82cm?

Cybex Cloud goes up to 87cm - I would be surprised if he still fits in it at 92cm? Is his head over the top?

The Minikid 4 has an enormously long back so will be fine even for very long bodied children Smile This is a good comparison of all the 125cm limit ERF seat back lengths:

Back height comparison | Extended rear facing car seats up to 125cm

There are quite a few extended rear facing car seats available that have a 125cm height limit. To find out how their back heights compare and if they are all...

... 92 cm. I am ashamed.

Thank you for the video and your advice!

Oh no it's fine! Don't worry! I was just checking in case it was a typo as you'd said 82cm earlier.

If his head is still contained within the seat shell, and he's not over 13kg, then it's likely still safe to use his current seat, but yes, best to replace as soon as you reasonably can - and definitely avoid the 105cm limit ones. You need a 125cm limit otherwise you're going to have to replace it, probably in about a year's time.

I am mainly impressed that the Cybex fits a 92cm tall toddler in it! I knew it was a big seat but I didn't know it was that big.

If he is over 13kg and/or head is over the top in addition to being over 87cm, then it's probably best not to take him in the car if you can help it (or see if you can borrow a 0-4 years RF seat from someone while you choose a larger one).

If you look on the Axkid website, you should be able to find out if there are stockists near you that have the larger seats.

OK, that sounds like a great plan! I will see where I can find a local retailer. And he was 82cm in Nov and I measured him the other day asi wanted to be sure of his current height. His head is within the shell and he is less than 13kg. Thank you so much

82cm to 92cm in 5 months is an enormous jump (approx 3 or 4 clothing sizes) so I would guess one of the measurements might be slightly out - but no matter. If his head is contained within the shell of his seat and he's not over 13kg, you have time to look for a retailer and ask for advice Smile
