Are we meant to have 4 car seats for 2 children

Just want to see what's everyone doing with their car seats?
We have 2 children and 2 cars. I am driving during the week when my husband works and every time my husband drives over the weekend we change the seats into his car. Also my husband takes older one swimming so we change back again mid week.
My question is are we meant to have 4 car seats? Our car seats are around £100, so that's £400...

What's everyone else doing?

We had sears in both cars. We could never be sure that the oerson taking the dc to school would be the person bringing them back.

Scarletttulips · 18/02/2024 11:48

Agree his and hers cars is somewhat unusual I think. People have a “family car” and “another car”

I don’t think it’s unusual at all. I’ve always had my car and DH has his car.

We drive each others sometimes - but prefer my own.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 18/02/2024 11:48

We are sensible and only have one car, we mostly use public transport it’s so much more interesting for kids

Helpel · 18/02/2024 11:49

We have been through three rounds of buying 6 car seats! 2 for each of our cars and 2 for the grandparents car. Not always possible to take the car with the seats in or to swap them about when life is busy or one is doing the drop and one is doing the pick up. We had baby spin seats (£150+ each), high backed boosters (£50 each) and now finally booster cushions. And at the risk of sounding like a knobhead, we are not rich but comfortable financially and always prepared to pay for convenience. If money is an issue you have to suck up some inconvenience (which we have to do for bigger ticket things - it's all relative)

SgtJuneAckland · 18/02/2024 11:51

We have one DC and when we had two cars we had two seats because sometimes I would drop him off at nursery in my car and DH would pick him up in his with us both at work in between, so no possibility to move the seat

We have 6! My car, husband's car, grandparents' car. We don't always know who will pick up etc so swapping isn't practical. When we had an infant carrier we used to swap that around but from the next stage we've always had one (well now 2) in all 3 cars. I don't want to count up how many seats we'll have bought by the time we're finished.

Congratulations. Have a medal. 🏅

We have 3 kids, 2 cars and, at one point, 6 car seats. Like other posters, it wasn’t as easy as “take that car if you’ve got the kids” for collection from out of school clubs etc.

We are kind and have two cars for doing our underpaid public sector jobs in areas not served by public transport 😂

Hahaha! Why don't you have no car, and just have two tandem bicycles?

Some people don't live anywhere near any public transport you know!

SockQueen · 18/02/2024 12:08

Our second car is only a 2 seater, so we've always had to swap cars rather than seats! On the very rare occasion that we need to take the kids to different things at the same time, we move one seat (HBB) into the front of the 2 seater.

Grandparents have their own seats

SkankingWombat · 18/02/2024 12:16

We have (shock horror to the PP who prides themself on only 1 car and lots of public transport!) 3 vehicles and 2 DCs. We have 2 seats in each vehicle.
The better seats are in the car the DCs are in most often, for the longest drives, and on the fastest roads. The second car has cheaper seats bought new, as they are used a few times a week but only for shorter local journeys. The third vehicle has seats that came second hand from friends. Swapping seats is a PITA.

I suspect you're not shift workers living in a rural area....

CoffeeChocolateWine · 18/02/2024 12:36

We swap car seats over when we need to but it's a pain. We only have one child using a car seat now though. Simply taking the car with the cars seats in won't work for us though as we have a big 8-seater as our 'family car' and a very small run-around for taking kids locally to clubs and to the supermarket. I'm not using the big car for that...I hate parking the damn thing! So we'll stick with swapping the seats over. Hopefully it will only be for a couple more years anyway.

FluffletheMeow · 18/02/2024 12:42

Just 1 kid, but yes we have a child seat for each car. Grandparents also have a seat and one for my nephew too.
Getting out the house is the worst, so in imo it's worth the expense to make life a bit easier.

mnahmnah · 18/02/2024 12:47

We had no choice but to have seats in both cars. I drop the kids at childcare or school then go to work. DH picks them up from childcare and school. I take one kid somewhere, he takes another elsewhere. Can’t just swap cars.

AnotherCountryMummy · 18/02/2024 12:55

Seats in both cars and another in GP car. Saves faffing and unsafe installation in a rush.

crumpet · 18/02/2024 12:56

There’s no “meant to”.

you can swap the seats, get enough seats for each car, or simply swap the drivers and keep the car seats in one car

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 18/02/2024 12:56

We always had 4 seats so didn't have to faff swapping them over all the time . My DM also had 2 seats for them in her car so our 2DC had 6 seats in total.

HMW1906 · 18/02/2024 13:14

We have car seats in both cars but I’ll often do the morning drop off and my husband will do the evening pick up so it’s too much of a faff to change them every day and have to leave the seats at nursery/grandparents every day. We also have car seats in my mums car as I can’t be bothered to move the seats over at 7am when I drop them
off on my way to work so basically we have 6 car seats….and we do extended rear facing so they cost a lot more than £100 unfortunately 🙈

Mimi32 · 18/02/2024 14:06

We have two cars (his and hers) and enough car seats in each. We tried swapped and it was a faff!! Grandparents also have their own car seats. Much easier all round.

ErinAoife · 18/02/2024 14:16

We had car seat for each car to avoid the hassle of switching them all the time.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 18/02/2024 14:27

Seats in each.

its often a different parent doing pick to who dropped off and both parents need a car during the day as part of their work so it's unavoidable.

Crabble · 18/02/2024 14:32

we have 4 seats
