Help! 2 y/o too big for car seat 5 point harness

My nephew is 2 years old, approx 18kg. He has outgrown the harness of a hard backed joie carseat and I am wondering if there are any recommendations for carseats known with extra long harnesses?

Don't think it is too safe to switch to a seatbelt just yet as he is too young to understand the safety and importance of it etc etc....

Any tips/recommendations welcome!

Thanks in advance!

You can get car seats which rear face up to about 25kg.

Contact the In Car Safety Centre - they can advise based on weight of the child, model of car and budget. And they post put the purchases.

joie bold - goes upto 25kg in a harness

just shop around - there are a few that go upto 25kg in a harness

Look at Extended Rear Facing Seats to 25kg which will be harnessed e.g. Britax Max Way / Safe Pro, Axkid, Klippan, etc. Much safer and higher weight limit harnessed. As others said In Car Safety Centre are helpful and / or a good Google / Car Seat Safety groups on Fb.

Seats like the Axkid Minikid 4 go up to 36kg so there are definitely options out there.

Thanks all, will take a look at ones suggested 😉

Yes, agree with all suggestions above! Absolutely you are right he is too young to go into a seatbelt just yet.

If the parents are keen on forward facing, Joie Bold is likely the best option for children on a higher growth line, as the straps go up much higher than other 25kg harness seats. They need seatbelt, isofix and top tether to fit this. Beware of Halfords as I've heard of people being advised that they don't need all three - this is incorrect. You definitely need all three. You want to be quick because they have been discontinued but there are still some on sale currently. Do not buy Cozy n Safe Hudson i-size as the harness limit is now lower on this seat.

If the parents do not have access to isofix and top tether in their car, unfortunately the options are more limited. The only forward facing option without top tether is Maxi Cosi Beryl, which can be fitted using seatbelt or isofix ( over 18kg, seatbelt only). However unfortunately the harness on this one is quite short, only lasting to about 110cm in height, which is unlikely to be long enough.

If they are willing to consider rear facing, this is an excellent choice in terms of safety and also gives them more choice in seats, however the rear facing seats are more expensive. On the budget end you have Axkid Move which is £245 (I appreciate, not a cheap seat). This will last up to 25kg in weight and approx 125cm in height. Or you can go right up to the higher limit seats in this category which go up to 36kg such as Axkid Minikid 4 / Besafe Stretch / Britax Safe Way. However, these are closer to the £400 mark price wise.
