Car seats

Car seat confusion

My mum has offered to buy the car seat and base - we looked at the new maxi cosi one that spins and slides and the cybex cloud T. They are both quite expensive but she was fine with prices. However I don't want her to pay for something that's a bit.. unnecessary? Or are these seats really worth it/make life easier? Most importantly they both seem good for safety. I'm not sure which other seats work with the uppababy adaptors.

I'm also not sure how often we'll take seat in and out of car. It's our first baby due in November so we'll likely do a lot of dog walking from our house and just short trips out. We bought the uppababy vista v2 for this reason as we walk a lot and by summer we'll be doing longer car trips to visit family and we go camping, but baby will be 7-9 months then.. is it worth getting a seat that stays in car and lasts longer with a newborn insert? Or are the first seats better for a newborn?

This stuff is new to me, it was hard enough choosing a pram!

For newborns having a seat you can clip in and out and take inside is brilliant IMO
If it's wet / cold / windy you can get them all clipped in and tucked in with a blanket and run them quickly to the car
Otherwise your standing with door open getting them settled whilst getting soaked haha

I only ever took the seat out when changing cars. And once put it on the buggy frame when I had to go to the dentist and take baby upstairs with no lift but have somewhere safe to leave him.

Never got the point of it otherwise.

The Cybex lasts a lot longer - I have the previous cloud z model for my 3 year old and she will still fit in a squeeze x

We got the cybex cloud T with 360 base. I have a slipped disc so for me I felt it would be much better on my back than getting the traditional ones and doing an awkward bend to get baby in the car. We got it as a package with our venicci tinum upline pram which is can be used with so it's handy that it comes out easily as I think I will go good for nipping to the shops etc. the cybex one will also lie completely flat so if baby is asleep you can just take them in easily and leave them in the car seat to nap at home etc which we thought was handy! currently 37 weeks with my first so no actual real life experience yet though 🤣

Spinning seat is a life saver with a recalcitrant toddler to wrestle. Not such a big deal with a newborn, when a seat you can clip in and out is useful.

Personally I think you can spend much less on a newborn car seat (around £250 for the set) and you don't lose out on very much.

For example, the Maxi Cosi Pebble Pro is very nice and the Cybex Aton series (whatever number/letter they are on now) are also perfectly good seats. The lie flat on those seats is not flat enough to be considered "officially" sleep safe (as much as a cot or moses basket) and TBH I never had a problem letting them finish a nap in a normal car seat - admittedly the advice was more laid back when I had my first, so maybe I'm just more lax on this. But the angle is fairly reclined on an ordinary car seat, especially with a newborn insert in, and as long as you don't leave them in there for hours at a time I think it's fine to let them finish a nap in there.

If you think you will leave the seat mainly in the car then the rotate base can be good. If you plan on generally bringing baby into the house in the seat then the rotation isn't needed. For the next stage, it is usually more cost effective to buy a separate seat that doesn't need a base. Don't be conned into thinking you're getting some great convenience by the base taking a toddler seat too. Most of them don't need one, and the ones that go into them are expensive. (The non spinning Maxi Cosi, Axkid or Besafe sets are quite good value for money, if you did want to do this.)

The next stage it really matters a lot more what you get and those seats can get expensive, so save your money IMO, or put the difference in a savings account for LO.

You can generally use any seat from the same brand on the adapters, so if it says it takes one Maxi Cosi, it will take any Maxi Cosi (etc) - as long as you are looking at the newborn seats, the ones for up to 4/7/12 years don't go on any pram adapters as they are too big/heavy.

I had a car seat that didn't come out. It was a pain and I wish I'd swapped to one that came out and clipped on to a buggy base much sooner. I had babies that often napped in the car and were hard to get to sleep elsewhere, so taking out the seat while they were asleep was a huge improvement on waiting in the car with a sleeping baby- particularly so with the second, as by then I was often taking the big girl somewhere.

Have a look on the “Extended Rear Facing (ERF) Car Seat Safety” Facebook page. Great advice available for all 🙂

@aprilclimbs hi, sorry to tag on older post. We are looking at buying the same pram. How have you found it?
