I've managed to narrow it down to the following -

Cybex Sirona S2 i-Size
OR
Maxi Cosi Eco Pro i-Size

I don't know which 😬

There isn't a huge amount of difference between these. The older Cybex is known to be short in the shell, so should be avoided unless your DC is on smaller growth centiles, unless you know you'll hand it down yo a younger sibling.

The Maxi Cosi has a very bulky one piece insert which makes it a bit tricky to fit babies in an in-between age - it fits newborn up to about 3-4 months well, and then it fits well from about 8-9 months but between this it's not that great because they are too big for the insert but the seat is too big without it.

What's made you narrow it down to these two specifically?

How old is DC and do you know their weight/height?

Have you the option to try the seats out in a shop (with DC if possible) and in your car?

I forgot to add, I don't know if the Cybex S2 has improved on the shell height.

Axkid have just brought out a spin seat but it can't forward face as Axkid do not make forward facing harness seats but it will pass the plus test which is the hardest test to pass.
I haven't personally seen the new Axkid spin seat in person but I like the brand and own the Axkid ONE and Axkid minikid as I missed out the 18kg type seat all together as I wanted to rear face as long as possible. https://axkid.com/uk/product/axkid-spinkid/
(not cheap one of the reasons we miss out 18kg seats and went straight for higher weight seats and I have a very low percentile child)

Axkid Spinkid - Axkid UK

Axkid Spinkid is a swivel car seat that facilitates everyday- life for you as a parent. The comfortable 180 swivel function makes it easy to handle whilst still featuring the huge safety benefits of rear-facing travelling.

@BertieBotts My lo is currently 16lbs4oz and 66cm 😊 I like them both and the fact that the spinning mechanism is just underneath at the front of the seat makes it easier for me rather than it being lower down and on the side of the vase like on the cosatto one I looked at today. To be honest I'm swaying more towards the cybex one I think 😊 my lo looked comfortable in it too!

Is this the one that you can remove and out on the top of a pram?

id pick whichever one is lighter tbh. We had the cybex older one and it was very heavy!

allthingssparkly · 22/07/2023 19:21

Lo is 5 months I should also add @BertieBotts 😊

@CorBlimeyGovnr No it's one that stays in the car x

I'd get a BeSafe Stretch B so going straight to an ERF/36kg one. The Stretch B is suitable from birth too.

BertieBotts · 22/07/2023 20:02

I think I'd vote for the Cybex then, as you'll be in the awkward stage with the Maxi Cosi insert for ages.

I agree that both of these are better than the Cosatto.

With the Cybex, you have to push it up to spin it, which is OK when you have a teeny 14lb baby but think about when you have a 14 kilo toddler - it does get a bit more unwieldy. But not necessarily a dealbreaker. They are nice seats to use.

I have to be honest I don't think there's anything about the Axkid Spinkid that makes it worth the price. Besafe have a spin seat for a similar price, also plus tested, which is worth looking at because it accommodates sloping vehicle seats, which most isofix car seats won't do very well. However, you don't necessarily need that unless you have a very angled rear seat in your car.

As others have said, if you think you'll want a longer rear facing seat long term, it can be worth the investment to start out with one from the beginning e.g. Axkid Minikid 3 (or 4), Avionaut Sky, Besafe Stretch. However, these seats do not have the spinning feature. All the spinning seats max out at 105cm which is approx 4 - 4.5 years for an average sized child.

BertieBotts · 22/07/2023 20:03

You wouldn't need the newborn insert for the Stretch, so could just go for the Besafe Stretch rather than the Stretch B - it's cheaper without this. It's OK to use without newborn insert from approx 3-4 months or 60cm, which OP's baby is over.

Lavender2021 · 22/07/2023 21:03

I always forget besafe do well tested spin seats, which look nice. I do like the look of the besafe stretch but we had seat's before that came out.
We had headflop problems in the cybex Sirona Z in a Ford Focus and Ford fiesta due to slightly sloped seats and a few other people have had the same problem. So if your seat's slope even slightly then the cybex may not cope. We now have a new car and that's even worse than the Ford Focus as I'm having to recline the Axkid ONE for sleeping and never did in the focus.

allthingssparkly · 22/07/2023 21:27

We've gone for the Cybex 🥰🥰

We have had the cybex for both our kids and except it being really heavy, have no complaints at all.
