I really need some help please.

My almost 3 year old has outgrown his Cybex Sirona Z car seat and I'm really struggling to work out what to get him next!

He weights approx 16kg and is approx 105cm tall.

I've read a lot of conflicting advice about whether or not to put him in a hhb and which way he should face etc....

Would really appreciate any advice that people can offer as I'm finding this a really confusing decision and I want to make sure I get it right.

Thank you xx

Hi. At not yet 3, he’s much too young to be in a HBB. Ideally he should remain rear facing for his safety until he’s 5.
There’s a range of ERF seats with weight limits up to to 25kg and some
up to 36kg. Your son is on higher centiles, so a 36kg seat will get you to safe HBB age. These seats are available from specialist retailers. If you’re on Facebook, pop your requirements in a post on Extended Rear Facing (ERF) Car Seat Safety and they should be able to help you select a seat and identify your nearest retailer.

Agree with PP, he's too young for a HBB so I'd recommend an ERF 25kg seat. Britax maxway or axkid move or minikid are good choices. The car seat safety group mentioned above is great for advice.

Hi, thank you so much for your replies. Can I ask, is it imperative that he sits rear facing?

Not imperative - but by far the safest.

I have the Joie Everystage for my tall child, he is nearly 6 but was comfortable rear facing for a long time. I bough another for my 1 year old as well.

Dd was heavier and taller at 3 and was put in a hbb. She was also a puker when rear facing so is forward facing and has been for a long time.

Axkid Minikid 3 would allow rear facing for as long as possible in a big child. It's a 36kg/125cm Plus tested extended rear facing car seat. Rear facing in this age group is considerably safer than forwards facing, so ideally keep him facing backwards for as long as possible.

At 3 he is much too young for a HBB, as he would need to be mature enough to sit up in the correct position throughout the journey, which most kids can't reliably do until around age 5. If you were averse to rear facing for whatever reason then a harnessed seat that can forward face such as the Joie Bold (up to 25kg) would be better than a HBB, but again much less safe than rear facing at this age.

At under three I agree he definitely still needs to be in a harness.

Joie Bold or Cozy n Safe Hudson are the options for forward facing. They harness up to 25kg. The Joie has the taller harness, so best for taller kids. The Hudson is cheaper and possibly less substantial but can be good for a second car/spare.

They all need top tether, if you have older cars with no top tether fittings then you'll have to use a rear facing seat.

The Joie Every Stage is no use here because the harness has an 18kg limit and you must stop using it after that. It also scored badly for forward facing so definitely not good if you want to FF.
