With or without all 3 on Isofix... What type of car do you have and what are the makes/models of your car seats?

We have a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso with a maxi Cosi 2 way pearl and 2 Britax Romers (kids are 3, 6, 8).

A Ford Kuga with two Joie Elevates and one Joie Stages. Children are 19m, 3yrs and 5yrs.

I have a Mercedes E Class with a Multimac in the back 😎

WingingIt09 · 17/01/2023 10:11

We've just replaced our car to be able to fit 3 seats as I'm pregnant with our 3rd - we now have a Citroen c5 aircross and it fits a besafe izi flex, Axkid Minikid 2 and britax baby star infant carrier (belted, probably will fit it on isofix base too but we didn't take that to the dealership when looking at cars).

WaddleAway · 17/01/2023 10:11

Peugeot 5008. 3 isofix points in the jback and it’s a 7 seater so 2 extra seats in the boot when needed.
Car seats are 2 maxi cosi rodifix air protect and a maxi cosi Tobi. We’ve had the car from DC3 being a newborn though so was previously a rodifix, a tobi and a pebble with an isofix base.

If you join extended rear facing seat group on Facebook they have a whole list of three across cars.
Avoid the Multimac it's not a safe thing.

But any car that has three full seats in the back should work-watch for storage boxes in the back seat floor as sometimes they can't have car seat load leg's on them.
Also read manual before you buy as some car don't allow child seats in the middle seat or front (should only rear face in the front with air bag off as forward facing isn't safe in a car seat in the front)

I've got an Audi A6 saloon with a multimac in the back

Only way I could get three seats in and most economical way to buy the right seats too and not have to change them

They are making an extended rear facing seat, too

I keep seeing people say this but I don't know why
My car is a lot safer in itself then having kids in the boot
I don't want to drive a car that is high up unless it has a big v8 engine lol
I want to drive a nice car that has a back on it so my kids are not in the boot

I am confused with the generalised statement they are not safe?

Why would they be in the boot? Our car has 3 isofix points in the back seats, but then a massive boot behind that. I don’t know anything about multimacs so not commenting on that aspect of your post, just wondering why another car would mean your children were in the boot?

Lavender2021 · 17/01/2023 11:17

@stopbeeping
They are regularly fitted wrong

They place the child too close to the door for side impact safety. A proper high back booster seat has side impact protection. Also if the car has curtain airbags along the side of the car this hasn't been tested with any sat that close to them.

They don't rear face for very long.

Child have died in them.

Forward facing with a harness isn't recommended as in a crash it puts extra pressure on the neck.

Manufacturers haven't tested it with their car and nor have NCAP.

You may have to tell your insurance as it might be classed as a modification as the car manufacturers didn't build it like that.

Rear facing seat and a proper high back booster seat is far safer.

It's pretty old but I don't think they have changed anything.

CPHB2021 · 17/01/2023 12:23

Land Rover discovery.

BertieBotts · 17/01/2023 18:08

They have made a change since that which review, they added an extra headrest for older children.

You have to weigh up the fact that they're forward facing and closer to the sides than normal against not having children in the boot seats or not having one in a seat in the middle or changing to a different car (perhaps older with less crash safety).

I don't think they're the right choice for everyone, but I don't think it's fair to say they aren't safe. In that one accident where children died it wasn't fitted correctly and it was an extremely severe accident involving a lorry, where an adult also died, so it's really not clear cut that the seat itself is unsafe. There's no such thing as a car seat that can prevent death in every single crash scenario, unfortunately.

Not sure where you have the info about it not being fitted correctly? I thought they are usually fitted by a mechanic or a rep from the company. If you mean the harnesses, it's true a lot of the customer pictures from their Instagram have really bad fitting, but that's fairly standard for all car seats, I don't think that somebody who has the harness wrong in their multimac is likely to do better just because they've bought a different seat.

trevthecat · 17/01/2023 18:17

Have a look at a multimac car seat. A 3 in one car seat. They are amazing!

Sorry I didn't see your reply

I didnt mean your boot, sorry. I meant a people carrier with two extra seats the children are right by the back

Never heard about the child dying, I'll look into that. What a total tragedy. Children will have died in all the car seats though surely?

Our one is solid and doesn't move, I'm so much happier with it then the Sirona

Thanks for the links

We have a people carrier with 2 extra seats but the children don’t sit there, they’re just extra spares in case we need to take my mum out with us for example. My children are in the 3 normal back seats, which have 3 isofix points for their car seats. If anything, the presence of the extra seats in the boot mean my children are far further away from the back pain of the car than they would be in a standard car, as the boot is huge to accommodate them.

Im looking at the mulitimac as we have a pug 2008. Readying the comments saying unsafe. Yes i agree if not fitted correctly, but then that is user error not the product. Also crazy to say a five point harness is more dangerous. It has to be safety hence why professional race drivers use them! I can see a problem unless fitted wrong. Im looking at the three seat option so shouldnt be any closer to the sides. Once a child is tall enough and weighs correct they dont require a high back version so again no issue.
