Please help me find this car seat - I don't think it exists!

My 3.5 year old needs a new car seat, we made the mistake of selling him getting a new one for his to go to the baby by saying he can have a red one, as he's obsessed with red.

Can I bloody find a red car seat, isofix compatible from a reputable brand that isn't seatbelt only? Nope. Loads of random ones but I wanted a trusted brand. I can find a few that are seatbelt only but I'd like a removable harness until he's 4.5 if possible. I found the Joie Elevate which is perfect looks wise but no isofix. The Joie Bold is everything I want in a seat but he really wants red, or atleast half red. He is forward facing.. I resisted until just months ago but there's no way I'd get him back rear facing now. His legs were bunched up and he was screaming in the car until we turned him and now he's used to it he won't turn back.

Obviously if it comes to it he will just have a black seat and have to get used to it, but if I can find a red one he will be very happy and it'll make my life worlds easier! HELP?!

Oh dear! I think britax romer do a burgundy but I don't think I've seen a red

PineappleWilson · 28/10/2022 11:47

Would spiderman do?

PineappleWilson · 28/10/2022 11:48

Or this - keep the seat pad in to keep the all red theme.

FlounderingFruitcake · 28/10/2022 11:50

Almost all of the cybex seats come in a proper bright red.

Dogtooth · 28/10/2022 11:59

Buy any seat, get a cheap red fleece blanket and cut holes for the straps.

doingitalllagain · 28/10/2022 12:12

That Evolva one looks great but you can't actually buy it anywhere in red

The Cybex ones look good with a seatbelt but he would hate the shield you use until they are old enough

I've found a Harmony Optyma on Asda which looks great, removable harness, isofix, red, converts to high back booster but not heard much about the brand so not sure if it's a safe bet?

He'd love a Spider-Man one but again I'm worried about lesser known brands, I want to know they're safety tested to a high standard like Joie etc are

This one ticks the boxes apart from brand.. does anyone know if Harmony are ok and where I can find out about testing etc?

Ah sorry mine was in a cybex booster from 3.5. As long as they meet the height requirement then I’d personally be happier with the known safety of a cybex HBB than the unknown of a cheap unfamiliar brand. But if you want harnessed now but can use as a booster later then I don’t think any of the cybex seats do that. Shame as it’s lovely bright red!

I'm nervous about the idea of him being strapped in with only a seatbelt! Perhaps it's worth a try. The cybex ones do look great otherwise!

We have the Bold and I would highly recommend it. It doesn't solve your colour problem. But can't he just be bribed with something else? The Bold is brilliant and my big DS was harnessed in it until he was almost 7.

I know you're trying to be generous to him but honestly, buy the safest, best seat you can afford and don't be tied down by colour.

Sweets. Toys. New red backpack. Whatever it takes Grin

All car seats go through safety tests.

This and buy two so you can wash them!

cliffdiver · 28/10/2022 13:03

Buy the best safety rated one and get a red cover made by a seamstress.

LillyBugg · 28/10/2022 13:03

'All car seats go through safety tests'.

Yes this is true. But there is still a scale of safety and some are definitely safer than others. Which is why you should do your research and buy the most suitable, safest, affordable seat for you and your child.

Harmony failed plus testing by Which. Generally, the cheaper the seat, the more skimping has gone on with safety testing ie, only tested via a forward collision at 30mph. Many have failed during independent testing at 40mph+ but because they meet the minimum standard (30mph) they can be sold.

Joie, Britax, Cybex etc are all made to pass plus testing.

Does it have to be Isofix?

doingitalllagain · 28/10/2022 13:21

Would like isofix as it's safer and easier I find the seatbelts so fiddly.

I think I give up! I might leave him in his Joie360 for now, put the baby in my sons old Cosatto one from birth and then wait until eldest is 4 and put him in a non harnessed Cybex from then onwards and switch baby to the Joie then. Hopefully he'll of got over his red obsession by then anyway! Grin

Maxi-cosi used to do bright red. You might be better looking directly on manufactures websites and order directly, most retailers only stock one or two boring colours.

Winceybincey · 28/10/2022 13:26

Ah I’ve just remembered that all harnessed forward facing seats fail plus testing. They pass rear facing but not forward facing, not because the car seat isn’t efficient but because of the heavy load on the child’s neck when the shoulders are pinned back by the harness. I suspect tho that the decent ones would still be better than the cheaper ones.

I think a high back booster is recommended from 4.5 - 5. There’s a brilliant car seat safety group on Facebook that have loads of knowledge and should be able to recommend one for you
