Toddler & car seat safety

twoundertwo2 · 18/09/2021 17:15

My toddler who is 2 years old is a real nightmare when out in the car and is always taking her arms out of the straps in her seat.
I pull the straps as tight as they go and she still manages to escape.
Our main concern is her safety when we’re driving if we have to brake suddenly etc she will have nothing restraining her!

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to help this situation! It’s an absolute nightmare 😆
TIA x

I have mine in cybex sirona - which when forward facing has the bumper bar rather than the straps I believe - you could try that?

Buy a chest clip for a toddler car seat. Dd has one and it stops her most of the time

LakeShoreD · 18/09/2021 17:40

Chest clip. They’re standard on North American seats but the U.K. law is that seats need to be sold with one release buckle. Fine to fit them after market though, just be careful to get the positioning right as they can be dangerous if placed wrongly.

FelicityPike · 18/09/2021 17:41

Definitely a chest clip.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2021 17:43

First thing to check is whether you have the straps at the right height for her, if they're too high or too low then it makes it really easy for them to escape.

However even if they are at the right place some children figure out how to get out anyway.

You can use the five point plus wrap around accessory or a chest clip. I like the besafe belt connector as it's crash tested which the Houdini ones or random brand ones on Amazon haven't been.

Thanks everyone. Have ordered a chest clip. Fingers crossed 😂

Just echoing the comment above to check the height of the straps where they go into the back of the seat - whenever mine started escaping, raising the shoulder straps stopped it immediately.

Thank you. We will check first thing in the morning ☺️

Jumping in as we have the same issue! I'd read a lot of clips weren't safe to use so looking for something tested and approved in UK. Is there anyway to check if the straps are at the correct height does anyone know?

BertieBotts · 23/09/2021 18:37

Check your manual as it should tell you where to set the straps in there.

Generally though you want them as close to the top of your child's shoulder as possible. If they are in between settings, go up one for forward facing and down one if they are rear facing.

If there is a headrest this should sit over the shoulder and cradle the child's head.

If the manual says different go by that as it overrides generic advice.

If you need a clip Besafe belt collector is crash tested, or Five point plus is a non clip solution to the same problem, also crash tested.

Brilliant, thank you

BertieBotts · 24/09/2021 16:59

Also don't use any bulky coats in the car seat :) You should not do this anyway but just in case you didn't know.

Kcoffecakebubs · 24/09/2021 17:13

@BertieBotts thank you. Yes, no coats in the car anyway but thanks. I've ordered the be safe belt collector, as his straps seem fine so hopefully that will do the trick

housemove123 · 24/09/2021 17:22

I used the BeSafe belt collector at that stage. It was just a phase, thankfully!
