Car seat after ERF

My DS is currently 2 yrs old and happily sits in the Axkid Move car seat.

Thinking ahead, what car seat brand would be recommended for the next stage?

I would like harnessed as long as possible.

I’ve seen recommendations for joie bold, Britax kidifix. Any others ?

The joie bold is harnessed to 25kg so the same as the move and likewise with other FF extended harnessing seats (some are lower ie Britax advansafix I-size is 21kg). If you wanted to continue harnessing/RF there’s the Klippan Opti-129 that’s harnessed to 32kg but very expensive!

Best option would be to go for a booster DC outgrows the move. We use the KidFix III S as I wanted to keep DC harnessed and with the XP-pad and crotch guard it felt a lot safer plus does really well on Adac (the same as KidFix iii m but has the XP pad). Others that have this feature include the rest of the Britax KidFix range (except the SL), axkid bigkid, BeSafe izi flex and chicco fold and go i-size. But as long as you stick to the big brands (Joie, Britax, Maci Cosi, nuna, cybex etc) then you can’t go far wrong with HBB’s Smile

Thank you @teaandlotusbiscoff

I’m trying to piece together information and recommendations regarding Forward facing car seats from previous posts, so trying to get a better understanding!

So with forward facing car seats is there a limit to how long you can harness?

Thinking way ahead..... just say my DS stays rear facing in Axkid Move up to 25 kg weight limit , can I continue to harness forward facing, or only option is high back booster with seat belt?

On the current market the highest harness capability FF is 25kg the same as the Axkid Move.

Since rear facing is safer than forward facing, there's really no benefit in switching to a forward facing harness seat before your child outgrows the Move.

You probably have 4-5+ years until you need to make this decision, so there may well be different options available then.

However, current thinking in Europe (particularly Sweden) is that it's best practice to avoid ever forward facing with harness. They say best to go straight from rear facing to adult seatbelt with a good high backed booster to position it. The reason for this is that being pinned back at both shoulders tends to place a lot of strain on the neck in a crash. Racing drivers for example wear a HANS device which holds the head back to help prevent neck injuries.

Australia and North America disagree, they say a harness is better. Honestly, there's not a huge amount of research on it but I tend to lean towards the Swedes. No 25kg forward facing seat gets a very good crash rating (currently) and our high backed boosters are streets ahead of the US options. I don't know much about Aus seats.

As the i-size standard has recently been updated to include high backed boosters we are only just seeing the first i-size HBBs on the market now, so I'd definitely hold fire and look again at recommendations in a few years' time. It's highly likely what's good now won't be the best option in a few years.
