Advice about car seat bases

Hi all so I am due to have a baby girl in 5 weeks and just looking at Prams. Maybe I left it a bit late as the one I really wanted isn't available until a couple of weeks after my due date. I really wanted one with a car seat that goes with it so I can just take the car seat out and put straight onto pram base. I've seen a couple of other prams, one significantly cheaper but the car seat included in the package doesn't come with a base. Is a base necessary? Are bases universal if I wanted to buy one separately? Or is it worth spending ( significantly) more to get one with the base included?

No you don’t need a base, you can just belt the seat in. Do make sure the seat is a decent one though, it’s the only bit of the travel system that really matters. What seat is it?

A lot of prams sell adaptors for the car seat you are using. These clip on the pram then the car seat can attach to the wheels
If you're after a isofix base you need to purchase one that's compatible with your seat.

Sorry I misread your question completely.
You don't need an isofix base they will belt in the car. However if you can afford to they definitely make life easier.

The isofix base will make tour life a lot easier if you are a regular car user. You can buy the base separately, make sure it is the right base for the car seat.

You don't need isofix but it's bloody useful if you can, a lot quicker and more safe as the rate of not fitting the car seat when using isofix rapidly reduces. Most prams/car seats sell adaptors so for example i have a maxi cosy car seat but silver cross pram. I bought from silver cross ( i think it was this way round) adaptors that go onto the pram to allow the car seat to then fit on.

I had bases with my first and thought they were essential, but didn’t bother with my second as it was just as easy to belt the seat in and didn’t mean a permanent base in the car, which can also reduce the front passenger/driver leg room if in a smaller car.

The majority of infant carriers are just as safe correctly belted as on a base.

So for me, I would say if it’s included then great but they are an expensive outlay, and you can easily manage without them.

Was torn between these, there doesn't look to be very much difference between them except for the base and the bag which I can buy separately

The Cybex car seat is really highly rated for safety whereas the babylo one is a bit of an unknown.

I doubt you will be able to buy a base for that car seat separately. Sometimes you can depending on the car seat model. As others said, you don't need it but it is nice to have one. Debatable whether it's worth £100+ though which is what a lot of bases cost!

It can sometimes be cheaper to look at car seats and pushchairs as a totally separate thing rather than a bundle set.

mummabubs · 31/07/2021 22:41

We have a Mamas and Papas sola 2 pushchair set from 4 years ago and the adaptors for the pushchair for our maxi cosi pebble car seat. We bought a separate isofix base for the car seat too. Have to say having it all linked in makes going out really simple (I have had healthy doses of baby brain through both my pregnancies and early baby days so I completely appreciate having something that means I don't have to think but just need to look for 3 green lights 😅

BertieBotts · 31/07/2021 22:41

The other big difference is that mamas and papas is a much better brand of pushchair than babylo. That's where most of your price difference is coming from.

You def don't need to spend £750 to get a decent set though. You can get a good buggy and car seat combo for much less. Let me know what features you're looking for and I can see what I can find tomorrow, although not so much a pushchair expert haha. The pushchair board on here isn't a bad place to ask.

welshweasel · 31/07/2021 22:45

Go with the cybex seat for sure

mlj123 · 31/07/2021 22:59

The original one I wanted was the completed set from mamas and papas which was £1400 and a nicer shade of grey, however wasn't available until after my due date, then I found the one on offer which is a lot cheaper and even though I cant choose the colour so wouldn't be exactly what I wanted seemed too good a deal. Then I saw the cheaper one which looks so similar and has good reviews so though it might be worth conscious. My mum has offered to pay for the pram so since she said she wants to pay I keep trying to find a cheaper one as I feel awful ordering a really expensive one now

What about this one? Would this be a better car seat?
