Best ERF seat for bigger toddlers?

I've got a 100th centile 9 month old who, if he follows his curve, will outgrow most of the 'rear face until up to around 4 years' car seats when he's two. He's outgrown his infant carrier and I'd like to buy him an ERF seat that will be comfortable for him, presuming he continues to be very tall and stocky. Which ERF seat offers the most space for the kid?

I've been looking at the Britax Max Way Plus- any good?

I have a Max-way. I like it. It fits in lots of different cars ok. It does take maybe 10 minutes to install correctly each time.

Thanks for replying. A few questions: Does your kid find it roomy and comfortable? Do they have enough legroom? Is the seat wide enough for them?

It’s pretty roomy I’d say. My child is nearly 2 and still has loads of room in it. His head is nowhere near the top. He’s not on the 100th percentile though. He’s above average height for his age, and I think it’ll be fine until he’s at least 4 or 5. It clearly would big enough for an average sized 4-6 year old, although they would have to fold their legs up against the backseat but that’s standard for rear-facing.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 28/07/2021 12:18

Mine is not the Max-way Plus by the way, just the Max Way model, bit I think they’re the same size and it’s just the side impact shield that has been improved on the Plus version.

Axkid Minikid will suit your child. Rearfacing until 25kg and very comfortable. Great for bigger kids.

Have you tried contacting the In Car Safety Centre? They could advise. But yes, Axkid probably the way to go.

leakymcleakleak · 28/07/2021 14:44

My 90-something centile nearly 3 year old is happy in the axkid minikid. I don't think it will end up doing her as long as I originally imagined but I do think we'll make it till 4 or very close to 4.

Axkid minikid is brilliant. The axkid one has fantastic leg room but will encroach on the passenger leg room in front seat. Depends how often passenger is used

ThirdElephant · 28/07/2021 17:58

That's really interesting about the Axkid minikid- I'd originally discounted it because I'd read it has quite a narrow seat?

@ThirdElephant I just had a look and the one you are looking at is a newer model that is used from birth. The old minikid is now called the Axkid Move as it seems the original minikid has been discontinued. This is what you should be looking at tonykealys.com/collections/axkid/products/axkid-move-grey
Here is the picture of our old minikid bought in 2017, the angle is not great sorry.

WhatsTheTimeMrCat · 28/07/2021 21:09

We have an Axkid Move for our 18 month old, who’s on the 75th centile for height and weight. He needed a wedge for it to be comfortable napping as it doesn’t recline as much as a first stage seat, but he’s been fine with it since we got the wedge. Goes up to 25kg. It’s a more basic version of the Minikid, which does clever things like auto-adjust the harness (for me personally, that wasn’t worth paying an extra £100 and something for).

I’d only describe it as narrow in the sense that it takes up less space than some seats. It doesn’t look like a tight fit for the child.

The ERF seats usually require tethers so it’s worth buying from somewhere that can support you fitting them depending on how confident you are. The In Car Safety Centre is good.

Cookofcastamar · 28/07/2021 21:24

@WhatsTheTimeMrCat our old minikid used to have all those features but I just saw now it is only on the minikid 2 and the move is like you said a basic. Such a shame as I loved the auto adjustable headrest. Now you have to pay for it. The new minikid (2) is from birth as well, although I loved the look of the Axkid one!

I have the Britax Max Way Plus and I'm very happy with it. My son is 4.5 and pretty tall (110cm) and he's comfortable in it. When we bought it, we tried him in the Max Way Plus and the Axkid Minikid, and we found that the Max Way Plus seemed to be more spacious and comfortable for him in the seat/crotch area. The Max Way Plus is also cheaper, it's on offer for £215 atm. And it's passed the Swedish Plus Test.

Which car do you have? You would just need to check that it's compatible.

Helpful post with photos comparing the Max Way Plus and the Minikid
