Has anyone used this seat for travel?

www.maxi-cosi.com/international/car-seats/nomad?color_swatch_id=5512

I have been looking at joie tilt/ grace extend for 15 month old for travel. Would ideally like rear facing, but they just seem so heavy/ bulky! Even though half the weight of our main fixed isofix sets at home ( which def can’t come with me)

I need to be able to transport myself, toddler, pram, luggage and car seat alone. Bonus points if it is faa approved for on flights.

Is there really nothing?

Is the nomad really suitable from 9months? Ds is currently 14 months and still in recline setting rear faced maxi cosi mica.

@BertieBotts is there a travel bag that you recommend for the car seat?

BertieBotts · 21/11/2022 16:31

I don't know anything about travel bags, sorry. I think they are probably all much of a muchness. They just keep them clean, they don't protect them from drops etc.

Thanks @BertieBotts and @FlounderingFruitcake that's so helpful. I guess we'll get one with our hire car. Last time we brought our cybex and this was ok as its sold in the US too. I suppose that's the other option?

Caspianberg · 22/11/2022 14:51

@WolfMother326 - tbh I don’t think anyone will care or check as long as it’s a suitable seat for age.
Police in any country aren’t car seat experts, if they pull a car over in Italy using American car seat for 2 year old, I really doubt they would ever know. They would only look that child is in a seat suitable for age ie rear facing under x age in that country.
A taxi driver 100% won’t care as people can legally use taxi with no seat.
So it’s basically up to you to decide what your happy with and I would just go with it.

Presuming you had the Cloud Z since they’re US range is much narrower and I think that’s the only infant seat they do there? The US seat is different despite sharing a name with it’s European counterpart. Like all US harnessed seats it has chest clips which is where you’d obviously be using a foreign and therefore illegal seat. So @WolfMother326 very unlikely you’ll get stopped yes and who knows if the police will care but you don’t need to be an expert to spot it since the clips (or lack thereof) are a really obvious indicator.

But from experience I have been pulled over for speeding on the interstate and the police did ask the age of my child since they were forward facing in a state that has rear facing laws until 2 (she was 2). The obvious message from that is obviously no speeding but I still wouldn’t be quick to say the police don’t care about car seat stuff.

Also not universally true. It‘s ok in NYC but for example it would be illegal in Chicago.

YY - despite using the same product names, car seat models are different for the US and UK markets. For example their Cybex Sirona S unlike ours can be fitted using seatbelt. Here there aren't many spin seats that can do that and they are all cheaper, questionable ones.

It's only high backed booster seats that they make identical models because the regulations are similar enough you can certify one seat design under both regulations.

I think it's likely as Caspianberg said that they just didn't notice. And probably wouldn't notice, but you do need to be careful with seats which are very obviouusly different for example the impact shield seats aren't sold in the US, and the rear facing until 2 years rule in place in some states. Later as well there is a harness until 5 rule in some states, whereas under UK/EU rules you can change to a seatbelt booster at 15kg which is approx 3.
