Car seat help for big 3 year old

Sideofnoreturn · 18/06/2021 09:59

We’re getting a car for the first time and need 2 seats - one for our 7 month old and one for our 3 year old. In theory we’d like ERF but 3 year old is 18.2kg and in the few times he’s travelled in a friend’s rear facing car seat he’s been travel sick. I’m wary of spending a lot on an ERF seat to 25kg if he’s going to be sick in it and need to forward face, but maybe the sickness was just because he’s not used to it. Any thoughts and recommendations welcome!

If relevant he’s only just turned 3 and is 91st centile for height.

Sorry, cross post.
He will need a 25kg harnessed seat if he's only just three. Too young for a seat belt HBB, even of he's heavy enough.

Sideofnoreturn · 18/06/2021 10:05

Thank you, yes I will get him a harnessed one. I was wondering though whether it’s worth getting one that rear faces to 25kg? Has anyone’s child stopped being car sick with more “practice”/experience? Is the safety difference worth it?

We ended up switching to FF with DD1- because of travel sickness- being FF didn't solve it completely but it much improved! We used the Joie bold which can also be used with seat belt later and a britax one (I can't remember the exact one but it could only be used with the harness)-both were harness up to 25kg. I recall there weren't many at the time that would have been suitable for both forward and backwards up to 25kg- I think just Diono one- although there might be more now.

Touch wood my kids aren't travel sick, but a friend of mine who has two children forward faced her eldest due to travel sickness and regretted it, so persevered with RF her younger one who also gets travel sick.

She has found that with a more upright seat (they have Axkid Minikid) it has helped. They got the summer cover for easy removal and cleaning. She uses a blind on the side window to give the child a clear view out of the back, keeps the car cool, and avoids feeding her little one too soon before any car journeys, particularly avoiding dairy products. It has helped and she reported no sick for over a year (again, touch wood!)

Good air con can really help if it's the kind which reduces the temperature inside the entire cabin. If your air con/fan is not this powerful and is getting blocked by the rear facing seat shell, then you could look into the "noggle" which is like a tube/hose you attach to the vent and then direct to point at the rear facing child.

There are currently no seats on the market which can RF and FF to 25kg. The Diono is discontinued and Britax changed their recommendation for the TWE when they re-certified it under R44.04, and say it's only suitable for FF to 18kg now. They still have the Multi-Tech 3, but this is only a booster seat after 18kg.

Do you currently have an infant carrier for the younger one? If so, it probably is worth trying a 25kg RF seat for the eldest. If he does not get on with it, then at least you could pass this on to the younger one in a couple of months and swap your eldest to forward facing. OTOH at three the difference is not as stark. It does make a difference, it makes a difference at any age, but the most dangerous period for forward facing has passed by age 3.

Does the car you're getting have top tether points? Have you already chosen it? I ask because all of the 25kg forward facing ones do need these tether points now.

Can you get one of the spinning ones so you can try rear facing and then forward face if it doesn't work out?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/06/2021 12:12

The thing that helps most with DDs car sickness is opening the window regularly.

LakeShoreD · 18/06/2021 12:16

If you’re keen to give rear facing a proper go, I would get a baby carrier for the youngest and a rear facing seat for the eldest. If the eldest really doesn’t get on with it then you can buy them a high backed booster once they’re closer to 4 and put the youngest in the rear facing one so it won’t be money wasted.

Thanks so much for the replies! We’ve got a basic maxi cosi cabriofix for the baby that should last another few months at least, so it makes perfect sense to try an ERF to 25kg for the eldest and then give it to the baby if it doesn’t work out…don’t know why I didn’t think of this myself! Thanks @LakeShoreD and @BertieBotts.

We haven’t chosen the car yet but probably a family estate - golf estate/Skoda Octavia/focus estate or similar. I will look into the tether points!

@4amWitchingHour I was hoping to get a spinning one but I’ve been researching and as Bertie says you can’t get one that spins/does rear and forward facing after 18kg, which my eldest is. The Diono looked good but seems to have been discontinued which is annoying!

@BertieBotts which seats do you recommend? I’ve seen you posting before and you seem to know your stuff!

We have just upgraded car seats for both my kids. Originally I wanted one which would have the option to RF then FF but none have the ability to do both past 18kg and DC2 is at least 75th centile.

We got an Axkid Move for my 17 month old as it is ERF to 25kg. It’s quite upright as RF seats go - we have ended up with a wedge as DC2 still sleeps in the car. But upright should be good if any nausea is an issue. Contrary to what you may end up thinking midway through the process (!), you can remove and wash the cover but check out a YouTube video first! It’s cheaper than the Minikid but still a good seat.

I think the Axkid Move is still on offer at £185, which is about £40 off.

We also looked at a Britax Maxway Plus (I think), which had no recline.

We got 15 months and 21 months respectively out of the Cabriofix for my two so you should be ok for a while!

BertieBotts · 19/06/2021 06:11

With those car models you should be OK with top tether points as long as you're getting a fairly modern car. If it's 2013 or later then it will definitely have them. If it's older, just ask to look in the boot as IME used car salespeople have no idea what they are - they look like this.

For 25kg rear facing models there isn't a huge amount of choice so it's (hopefully) not too hard to choose! I'd look at these for the best price/performance ratio at the moment:

Axkid - Move / Minikid / One
Britax - Multi-Tech 3 / Max way Plus
Besafe izi Plus

It's the Britax Multi-Tech that doesn't recline, but it is the cheapest good 25kg seat on the market at the moment. The Maxway Plus does recline.

Move / Multi Tech 3 are the budget options at about £200.

Minikid / MWP / Besafe the premium options at about £300-350

Axkid One is the only isofix seat in this weight class which is why it costs £600.
