To spin or not to spin?!

15 month old on 25th percentile and still fits in her infant carrier but probably not for too much longer.
I'd like rear facing with the option of forward facing.
Should we go for an up to 4 year one or the 12 year ones?
Spin or not?
Thanks!

@Heyha that's exactly the thing I was thinking too. My daughter is never going to be tall as I'm not! But still don't want her to outgrow the I spin in height ..but then the safety ratings are better for it! Confused from what I've read the joie360 is perfectly safe just the i spin did perform better in some of the tests such as side impact.

Yes that’s right, if you want to forward face dont go for the spin safe. Joie 360 is safe and one of the best, yet some tests haven’t had it performing that well in side impact as you said. The rotation is also different—had side thingys to rotate it while with the regular spin it’s under the seat—and you can’t forward face before 16 months on the i-spin (I believe there may be a certain height too).

Also worth bearing in mind; is your DD long legged? As the problem with the i-size seats are that if DC is long legged they may still be able to fit in the shell for longer but because most of their height is in their legs they have to stop using the seat anyway as they’re over the height limit!

Heyha yes you've understood all that correctly :)

It's the side impact that makes the difference. You could look at Britax Dualfix 2R instead, this has better side impact protection than the Joie, but if you go for the non i-size then you don't have it limited to 105cm. I am not 100% sure how much taller the Joie is, if anything, than the Britax. I have put them next to each other but can't remember off the top of my head - sorry!

Joie Spin Safe was tested in the most recent batch of seats for ADAC/Which? and got a really good score for frontal impact, which means that the normal Joie Spin 360 will have a similarly good score, in rear facing mode. The score it gets for frontal impact in the original is likely to be in relation to forward facing mode (I'm not 100% clear on whether these are an average or the worst score is used, different sources explain it differently).

You have to remember a lot of these seats are designed around a max child height of around 105cm anyway, they aren't massively taller. For us it made sense to go for the non-i-size, because first of all we're in Germany and the version sold here (GT version - maybe see if you can find this in the UK?) does have side impact protection in it, but secondly because I specifically wanted as much height as possible from an up to 18kg seat! If you aren't concerned about outgrowing by height then the difference between an i-size one and a non i-size one is likely to be negligible and I wouldn't worry about it.

Other well rated ones both for frontal and side impacts with the option to both RF and FF:

Non i-size (up to 18kg, no stated height limit)
Britax Dualfix 2R

i-Size (limited to 105cm - may have 18kg / 19kg weight limit)
Britax Dualfix i-Size / Dualfix M i-Size
Cybex Sirona S i-Size (you also have the option of Sensorsafe)
GB Vaya 2 i-Size
Recaro Zero 1 / Salia
Nuna Rebl Plus
Besafe izi Turn

Oh yes, good point about legs - the Joie seats do sit very close to the back seat. This isn't necessarily a problem, as children can cross their legs or rest them over the sides of the seat, but some find it annoying and sometimes parents think it looks uncomfortable for them. So even though they offer more height possibility for taller children, you might run out of leg room faster.

The best ones for (child) leg room are the Britax, Recaro Salia, and the Besafe.

We have Joie Spin and highly recommend. Had a crash at about 80km hr,car wrote off, I broke wrist, other injuries. Neither kid had a mark on them.
BUT my 3 year old is very short for her age and can't rear face in it now. Nowhere for her legs to go.

DarkDarkNight · 29/10/2020 16:31

Spin! We had the Britax Dualfix and it was so much easier to wrestle a reluctant child in to. Saved my back.

Just wanted to update on this in case of people searching in future (hello!)
We got the Spin360 and I can honestly say there is very little that I like about it and can't understand why it's so popular. If you don't have it rammed right up to the seat back when RF it wobbles disconcertingly but that then means it's really tricky to find and use the spin lever because it's pushed up against the seat (ridiculous place to put it). I also don't like the strap mechanism or the straps themselves.
I hate the Joie Tilt in my car too but thought that was just with it being a seatbelt secured thing. The Spin is in a very normal estate car so not trying to wedge it into a very big or small seat.

I genuinely can't understand why the Joie products are so popular having now got stuck with two of them that both have few redeeming features and none that are unique to them. Lesson learned, back to Maxi Cosi in future!

Britax multitech is rear facing and forward facing to 25kg. That's what we had for DD1 and only just got rid. It doesn't spin though. We didn't get another for DD2 as it didn't fit my newer car as well. We got the axxkid move this time. It doesn't spin, but I don't get the big benefit of it tbh. It's not difficult to get DD in and out of and it won't be long still she can get in herself.
