Britax Eclipse vs Diono Radian 5

Hi

I want a car seat I can use on a plane but also as a spare.

My DD is a small 19 months. These are the only two I can see that might fit on Ryan air / easy jet.


I really wanted to here peoples experiences.
Diono Radian 5
-It's heavy how did you find getting it thorough the airport?
How was installing it on the plane?
On the safety report it got marked down for ease of instalation. Has anyone tried it in a taxi or hire car. What did you think?
How much space does it take up in ERF in a car. Has anyone had it in a BMW 3 series estate?
The big plus for me is it extended rear face so is safer and lasts till 7.
However if its to heavy and I cant install it it is no good.

Its lighter and looks easier to install but is forward facing so less safe but I'm wondering if for taxis and flying on your own with a toddler it is more practical.

I’ve used the US version of the Diono radian 5.

The plus side is it’s really narrow so will definitely fit on a plane seat. We’ve used it to fly internally in the US. We bought a Diono travel bag for it as well as a strap thing that attached it to a wheelie case so we could wheel it through the airport. It was a hassle though so we didn’t bother on the return.

As a car seat it’s true that it is a complicated fit. But I think that is true of any birth-booster seat as they have to work in so many different configurations. I haven’t used it rear facing but I would imagine it takes up a lot of room. You can buy a wedge for it I think to improve that but it’s definitely designed for larger US cars imo. The real plus side is that if you have tall/heavy kids you can keep them in the 5 point harness up to 25kg before changing it to a booster. But if your dc is on the smaller side that might not be a problem you need to solve.

I chose not to buy the Diono 5 as a replacement when we returned to the UK and got a Britax instead. Unless you need to install three car seats in a row (it’s probably the narrowest seat on the market) I probably wouldn’t recommend.

I love it. We fly a lot and always take it. We bought wheels for it as it's fucking heavy.

Not hard to install, I must have installed it in over 100 different cars now (lots of Uber's/taxis).

When rear facing you pretty much have to use the wedge. People tear face a lot longer here (ds was 4.)
