Stage 1 upwards for a VW Polo - avoiding head flop?

My twins are still in their Joie iGemms and will soon be approaching the weight limit. However, I want to replace them now - the problem we are having is that the rear seats have a backwards tilt so even with the bases the seats aren’t positioned correctly and their heads flop forwards when they fall asleep. They’re over 12 months now so not as concerning and they don’t go in the car often but would like it resolved before going on any long journeys.

I’ve been looking at the Joie Stages and Every Stage - wondering if anyone has a Polo and can tell me which seat they use?

If you're on Facebook, join the group 'car seat advice UK' she search polo to see what other people have fitted in their cars.

With sloped seats it's really hard to get a good fit with isofix because it's far too rigid. Belt fitted seats are your friend!

The Every Stage is a good rear facing seat but when it's fully extended it takes up a lot of room so possibly not great for a Polo. If you're interested in it, get it properly fitted in your car with it fully extended to check before you buy it. Independent car seat retailer is much better than high street for this.

The Every Stage did score really badly forward facing using the harness so it's not a good option there. However, rear facing is recommended until at least 4 years so you don't need to use it forward facing until it's used as a high back booster. Be aware that it only harnesses until 18kg so if your twins are above 50th centile for weight or height, they are unlikely to fit it by 4. Track their weights and heights in their red books to check this.

Two better options would be the Britax Two Way Elite and Axkid Minikid. Both rear face to 25kg and are very compact seats so should fit very well in a Polo.

Thanks so much :)

My boys are small - they’re still in the weight and height limits for the iGemm and they’re almost 19 months (they’re just under 11kg and 78 ish cm so they’re pretty dinky). The head flop has only recently been an issue though, but then as I say they’re not in them very often, so even though they still fit comfortably it makes me anxious that they’re so far above the general age limit even if that’s just a guideline.

I’ll definitely join that group. I suspect we will get a new bigger car before a while they’re 4 anyway, so it’s really the next year or two at the most it will be an issue.

I'd definitely look at the Joie Stages as well if they're small. I'm not sure of the differences exactly but I think the Stages would fit in a Polo better than the Every Stage.

Good luck with your hunt!
