Taking newborn out in Group 0-4 Joie 360 car seat

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has brought a group 0-4 car seat that has a fixed base. I was considering the Joie 360 car seat and love that I could use for a long period of time, but what do I do if I'm going out to someone's house with my newborn? I'll have to take the baby out of the car seat and hold in my hands (usually the Group 0 carseat means you can just take the car seat out and leave newborn in there if asleep etc. What do I do if I only have the Joie car seat?

Put the pushchair up and put them in that, take the carrycot part of the pushchair in the house with you. Carry them. Put them on the floor/blanket/sofa etc. Put them in shopping trolley newborn bit if shopping. People shouldn’t be keeping newborns in the portable carry car seats anyway :-) x

Just be aware that because these seats are designed to last to about 18kg, they don't necessarily have the best fit for a newborn because the recline is often compromised, and this can be particularly bad if the seats in your car are sloped. If you do want to go with one of these seats, make sure you have it properly fitted (independent car seat shop is much better than a high street retailer) so that you can check the recline before your baby arrives.

Also, it might seem a long way off but if your child is above average height or weight, these seats won't last to 4 as that is just a guide and you will have to buy another seat before they will be old enough for a high back booster (age 4 is the minimum recommended). For my son, he would outgrow an 18kg seat at 2.5yrs, my daughter would reach that at just after 3yrs. But you won't know this until they're here!

Although the birth to 18kg seats seem economical, infant carriers are best for babies to travel in the car in. Then a 25kg rear facing seat will last you the longest and keep your child safest for the longest.

If you do go for the 360, you'd have to take the baby out and use a pram or a sling when you're getting out of the car.

Thank you both for your responses. I may just get an infant carrier for the first few months and then use this one, as it'll have more recline for the baby as a newborn and it'll be easier to get baby in/out of the car.

Holding your baby in your arms is just fine. Some might say normal; but there again many seem to think dangling them in the world's heaviest car seat is preferable.
