Seat belt car seat for holiday - group 1

Does anyone have any recommendations for a seat belt attaching car seat?

Currently have the Nuna Rebl, which is great but don't want to take that on holiday abroad as it's huge! Looking at hiring and costs mean it's just as well to buy a spare we can use again really. Have also read about hired car seats being tored/dirty and often v old models. Looking for seat belt fixing one as no guarantee hire car will have iso fix.

DD is nearly 20 months.

I'm also wondering about getting one that can be used on the plane. We haven't bought an extra seat this time but we will have to for any future hols but can't find much info on car seats that are suitable to use on planes. Anyone know of any?

I've got an American car seat that can be used on a plane. We bought it while we were on holiday and then DS (22 months then) sat in it on the way home.

Unfortunately we can't use it here because it relies on US locking seat belts to work.

Thank you for replying but I'm looking for one that we can use in UK car seats as well as possible plane use. Thanks anyway.

Britax Eclipse, fairly lightweight compared to some car seats, easy to install with a seat belt and certified for air travel - here
Britax Prince is an older, more lightweight model but I think it's being discontinued as I couldn't find any information on the Britax website. It's still available in the shops though.

May not be that useful for you, but I just wanted to add that in lots of countries another option is specialist baby equipment rental companies, if you don't want to take your own. We are hiring a car seat for our DD for our holiday to Canada in a couple of weeks and the lady who owns the company has been so helpful and reassuring. Helpfully in Canada all cars made since 2006 have isofix so we know that the seat will definitely fit the hire car. We've also hired a car seat on holiday in Ireland rather than take ours as luggage.

I have a friend with twins, at 14m she hired a car and was promised suitable seats by the company - when they arrived, they were presented with two high back booster seats!!! She was completely and utterly stuck as she was on her own and the company said the seats were not guaranteed so they wouldn't help further. Luckily another company at the airport who had more suitable seats stepped in - although they were FF and dirty but at least they were legal for the kids.

We have a britax eclipse as a holiday seat (have ERF seat as main seat) and used it for our then 2 year old last year on Ryanair flight. It was great, she sat happily for the whole flight and didn't want to get up and mess around as she was strapped in yo car seat so just accepted we were travelling. She fell asleep comfortably and could see out the window.

It was a bit of a pain carrying the seat in the airport with us but I'll definitely take it again when we next travel. Meant we had a seat we knew was safe and we were confident installing correctly in our hire car too.

I seem to remember reading about two way elite being used on plane too but I can't 100% be sure. That would give you option of rear facing in the hire car too

Yes, I've seen pictures of a Two Way Elite (Britax seat, only available in the uk from the In Car Safety Centre) on an aeroplane seat. I don't think it's got official TUV approval, but it's certainly narrow enough to fit a plane seat and can be fitted using just the lap belt.

Thanks for all your help. Going for the Britax Eclipse I think as it has the approval and don't want to end up having trouble getting it onboard. Have erf for our main car seat so this would just be for on the plane and hire car/coach etc. Not ideal but the best option I think.

Looked into rental and I've just heard too many horror stories about getting really old seats, and having no idea if they've been in an accident etc. Also, by the time I've hired a car seat twice I could have bought one so may as well do that and have a spare for other children/grandparents.

A few years ago I travelled on my own with my daughter and took the car seat on board for her to sit on (it was the Britax Prince, I think).
