I don't have a clue what one to get or what features I should be looking for

How old is your child?

I've been looking at a hauck varioguard. I want DS2 to be able to rear face til at least 2 and I find isofix easier. The Joie seats looks good too but aren't isofix.

She is 6 months at the moment but just thinking for the future

As a minimum, something that rear faces to 13kg eg Britax First Class plus (this is what I have). Better yet - especially if I had a heavier than average child (as my dd2 is) - a seat which rear faces longer. Britax have a new car seat out which RFs to 25kg, the Max way. I would buy that, and wish it had been around when I was buying for my now 3 year old. Would buy it for any third child I have; leave them rear facing until about 6 when they go straight to a high back booster. It is safest by a long shot, and save buying too many car seats too.

Exactly what 4yoniD said! The only feature you should be looking for is that it's rear facing. The ISOFIX ones go up to 18kgs, the seatbelted ones go up to 25kgs. I have a Britax Multi Tech II that my 2 1/2 year old DD2 has been in since she was 11 months old. It is rear facing until 25kgs, and since she only weighs 10.5kgs now, and is on the 9th centile for height too, I fully expect to keep her rear facing until she's at least 5 1/2 or hopefully 6.

Id go for (and did!) an extended rear facing seat. DD will be in it til she is four at least (based on weight - may get longer out of it if she stops getting so tall so fast)

Should add DDs is the Britax Two Way Elite which I love and she seems really comfy in.

We chose the Cybex Sirona. It is excellent.

I've had a maxi cosi priori (before I found out about erf), a britax hi way, a britax two way elite and a KISS. Out of them all I found the twe to be the best. Smile

The most important feature you need is that it has the ability to fit securely in your car. Forward or rear facing won't matter if its not fitted properly.

Ideally you want something that allows your child to rear face for as long as possible.

The Britax TWE gets rave reviews.

I have a Joie Steadi as I don't drive or use cars regularly so couldn't justify £200 -300, I wanted something that could rear face until 18kg and that was easily fitted for taxis/lifts and within budget, ours was £130.
