Rear facing and front facing car seats?

I've been looking at purchasing a car seat and wanted some advice. Can all car seats be used in the front facing position when your baby has grown out of the rear facing position?

I'm looking at the Graco Logico S HP car seat, all the information regarding the seat states that it is a rear facing car seat. So what happens when my baby has out grown the seat... say by 6/9 months? Could I just turn the car seat around and fix it with the seat belt or would I need to buy another car seat just after 6/9 months usage?

I'm very confused at the moment! Any help would be appreciated.

Wishfulmakeuping mentioned the swivel. That wasn't the advice I was worried about though, that was clearly just a naming error - it was the poster saying that babies outgrow group 0 car seats by 9 months and recommending eBay Hmm

Ah yes I see now. To be honest the swivel is only really necessary in 3drs IMO. I have been using ERF for ages. They are so easy to access!

Wow... Thanks for all the help everyone. Three days of research, stress and worry sorted within minutes. I understand the car seat situation much better now and all the advise was very helpful. My problem was I didn't realise you had to go through different car seats and thought one should last you forever Grin.

Think I'm going to stick to the Graco Symbio B 3 In 1 Pram / Pushchair with the Graco Logico S HP car seat and then purchase the bigger car seat when baby has out grown it.

Thanks again everyone... You've been very helpful! Smile

Ah I see Grin nope - gone are the days when you had a carrycot, a car seat when they sat up and then rattled around on a cushion! The law changed in 2004, and since then car seats are mandatory until children reach 12 years old or a certain height. Clearly, a car seat for a newborn isn't going to fit a 12 year old, so the idea of "groups" was invented and now you have to move through them.

Generally everyone buys a stage 0+ car seat first. Ours lasted newborn-15 months ( at which point second child was born so lasted another 15 ish months). Both our children are fairly tall but didn't grow out before then. We had a besafe izi sleep

Then after that you need to buy another seat. These vary in how long they last. We have brought the besafe izi combi which is then suitable from growing out of stage 1 until around 4 years. Our 4 year old still fits and is still rear facing.

When they grow out of this they then need a 3rd seat which is usually a high back booster and fits with regular adult seat belt and lasts roughly 4-12 years. When they no longer need a seat

I would recommend you choose a pram suitable from birth and buy a car seat separately. Babies shouldn't stay in car seat for more than an hour a day due to spine so a carrycot/ lay flat pram is more suitable out and about

Fwiw we have Grace Evo with compatible car seat and find it a really good system.

Also, the hour a day thing is not quite practical. What about people with long journeys? At an hour a day it would take the best part of a week for me to get to my folks! The advice is really that they shouldn't be in their seats all day, and if you're travelling long distance then make sure you break it up and take them out of the seat.

Clargo55 · 12/01/2014 22:29

It's not an hour a day, it's an hour at a time. Just stopping for a break will help change the position the spine was in and bring the baby's oxygen levels back up. Think the problems comes from when people do an hours drive, then pop baby in car seat to so some shopping for a few hours and then leave baby in car seat when then get home to not wake them. This prolonged time is no good for there spine.

Clargo55 · 12/01/2014 22:31

I think that's what ArtandCo meant Smile

Artandco · 12/01/2014 22:32

Obv long journeys have to happen some times, but they mean on a day to day basis. Babies grow a lot and so if day in day out they are in car seat in car, then in supermarket, then inside friends, back in car, it eventually adds up to a lot of time not laying flat. Going 5 hours one day to relatives every 2 months is ok

heartonsleeve · 12/01/2014 22:35

Agree. Sorry, not trying to cause ructions; it was a query that bugged me when we were researching seats Smile

Wishfulmakeupping · 13/01/2014 18:55

Sorry I meant we have the dual fix think I've confused things but again it is fab wish I'd have know about it before buying a cabriofix first!
