128cm tall, 30kg only just 6 year old - which HBB?

Hi

I have just realised the HBB my son uses says on the label it is only suited up til 25kg (it was a stage 1-3 and is meant to be used as just a cushion from 25-36kg!) He does look very big in it - head way over the top, but still "fits" and isn't uncomfortable in the too-small seat! - his height and weight are roughly on the same centile so while he is broad across the shoulder and clearly isn't skinny, he isn't overly bulky.

He sometimes just sits on a cushion, but with winter coming and icey roads, and for longer journeys where he still occasionally falls asleep (!) I'd like a new HBB. I don't want to spend vast amounts if possible, though also obviously want something safer than a booster cushion.

Are hbb much of a muchness in all honesty, or is there a lot of difference? Any recommendations?

I would just go and sit him in a few and see which one looks the most comfy and goes up the highest and sits in you car nicely. Both my girls said the graco ones were not comfy. have had kidfix (britax) but older ones is to wide across the shoulders to fit now. The maxi cosy air protect is good but doesn't go as high.

Thanks Jelly for replying. I guess that is probably what I'll do. With prices ranging from about €28 to well over €150 for a HBB I was trying to work out whether there is any genuine difference in safety, for a child of this size (the way there is when they are smaller), but maybe there isn't...

The Diono Monterey is good as it's designed to go to 120lbs/5ft 3 though in the EU due to the group system it is only rated to 36kg/80lbs. The shoulder wings adjust outwards too so it can fit a broader child too.

There really is a difference in safety between a booster cushion & a high back booster and you do get what you pay for especially if you are looking to fit a larger than average child.

We used to have a Premaman group 1,2,3 seat (was from Renolux) and the top slot on the harness was also the highest point for the seat belt adjuster as a HBB which meant once the child outgrew the harness they had to use it as a booster cushion - for DD2 that was about 2.5y & 13kg! Luckily it was just a spare so it didn't get used Hmm

Hi Truth thanks for the reply. I know there's a difference between the cushion and the HBB, but I wondered about the differences between HBBs, given the vast price range - there are HBB on Amazon for well under €30, and both in the shops and on Amazon the prices go up over €170.

I will have a look at the Diono Monterey, thank you for the recommendation! If we try to keep him in a HBB til he's 10 (at least for long journeys, realistically not for short ones by then) he will indeed be about 5 ft 3 and 120lb / 150cm and 50kg, according to the line growth chart he's following (the 97th percentile).

We drive from Bavaria to the Yorkshire and back once a year, which is close to 1000 miles each way, so its worth having a HBB that will last him a few more years for that alone!

I have two Britax Adventure HBBs and I really like them. My son is 8 next week, average build and 131cm tall - he's never moaned about sitting in it and sleeps comfortably in it too. It's fantastic value for money, the RRP is £60 I think, but you can usually find them on offer for £30-£35. They are a million times better than the basic Graco one that sells for a similar price.

My ds is 6 and 130cms. He has a Recarro sport and he still sits with the high back on it comfortably. We got it two years ago as we knew he was going to be a tall lad!

Thanks Winter and Alice, I'll see which of theae we can find locally to try him in over the weekend.
