Second car seat for toddler

Hi, I don't have any clue about car seats as we got the one which went with the pram, the base, and therefore when getting the next one bought the matching seat (pebble/pearl).

But we could do with a second one for our second, non isofix car, and for the occasions I'd like to take a second toddler out.

Any recommendations? Would rather they be on the cheaper end of the scale...

How old is the child you would be transporting regularly? I have a really good one from Argos which went from newborn up to four. Iam however looking to buy a new one now she is 2 and a half but that is more t do with my car being small and her being big.

Ah, child is 14 months, just out of his baby carrier

Babystart remi plus group 0+1 car seat Argos have it half price at the mo... My daughter was so long she was out of the carrier at 9 months..
Have a look at argos theyhave a sale on at the mo

pizzaqueen · 18/07/2013 22:40

I would stay away from argos and asda babystart and nania car seats they are cheaply made and perform poorly in safety tests.

try britax or maxi cosi. perhaps the first class or priori xp.

just because its a second car doesn't mean you'll be any less likely to be in an accident when using that seat.

Justneedhelp · 18/07/2013 22:47

Obviously safety is paramount however I feel maxi cosi and britax are just overpriced variations of baby start seats.
Also Any forward facing seat is more dangerous than rear facing I think it depends on how much high speed driving is done even then I wouldn't agree expensive means better

AmandinePoulain · 19/07/2013 07:03

I disagree about Britax and Maxicosi - they spend a lot of money on testing their seats to a high standard, particularly the side impact protection. Yes they cost a bit more but I think when it comes to carseats that's money well spent. Nania just agreed to refund customers after a load of their seats were found to be dangerous. And I say that as someone that had a Nania for dd1 that we bought in France after an explosive sick incident, it was all they sold in the French equivalent of Halfords and I didn't know then what I know now.

Have you considered the Britax First Class? We got one for around £90, they rear face until 13kg and fit just about any car Smile

AmandinePoulain · 19/07/2013 07:05

And most accidents occur within a few miles of home so not necessarily at high speed Hmm

lagoonhaze · 19/07/2013 12:03

A good quality forward facing seat doesn't need to be expensive but £60 is the minimum I would look to spend on a britax eclipse or similar.

Most own brand seats are made by Team tex and of poor quality, made of cheap quality plastic, there are no steel enforced parts whatsoever.

And don't be deceived by Fisher price and pampero (in Halfords) they are the same seats with a more expensive price tag.

They scrap the legal minimum tests. .It includes a frontal impact at 31mph, a rear impact at 18mph and a complete 360º roll-over at 2-5º per second. Britax and Maxi cosi do extra tests

poocatcherchampion · 20/07/2013 19:21

we've just got the joie stages as our second toddler seat. it converts into a hbb so should do us for its 5 years. its rf and then ff.

bellablot · 20/07/2013 19:36

If you check out the Which? Recommendations you'll find your answers. They have 'best buys' which pass all of there rigorous testing procedures. They also have a section of 'don't buys'.

Some seats are deemed very unsafe so beware, just because its a second car doesn't mean you should slack on safety standards.

Thank you everyone

The maxi cosi Axiss swivels through 90 degrees and has helped me and my back enormously, especially as am now 5 months pg with DC2. Not cheap at £175 but worth its weight in gold if you are puny like me struggle with getting your DC in and out.
