Maxi-Cosi FeroFix recline and iso-fix - am I missing something?

Just bought this seat today and it seems great... but I find that I can't recline the Fero fully when the base is flush with the back of the seat. I would assume that the base is meant to be flush with the back of the seat? The only way I can recline (as far as I can see) would be to leave a gap behind the base. It's possible to install the car seat that way but the ratchet mechanism allows the seat to move back (but not forwards) which is why I'm thinking it needs to be flush... (or with something inserted behind the base to stop it from moving back)
I feel like I must be missing something as it's a very popular car seat.
Our car is a 2006 Golf TDI 5 door so not exactly the rarest car on the road!

Had a look but that doesn't solve my issue. It looks like it was installed flush with back of seat. As the back seat doesn't recline I don't see how the Fero can.

To be fair, it does recline a bit just not as much as when freestanding. Shame my back seat doesn't recline! :(
