Hen's fucking teeth my friends.

Unless I want to pay £600 for a Britax special needs seat! Argh!

So, what does your 4 year old sit in?

DS is big (91st centile height, 75t5h for age). Due to wieght and height he went into a high back booster, no harness at 2.9. I was v nervous about it, but a year on he had never tried to undo the seatbelt.

CaliforniaLeaving · 03/07/2012 23:03

Our Dd went into a Recaro high back booster at 4.5, not a five point harness it's good to 54 kilos and 5 foot tall. I would fit in it Grin
Our old Britax with a five point harness went to 28 kilos it was a Marathon, not a special needs one. Dd still fit in it but we moved her up so she could get out in the drop off line at school This is like hers only ours was red. www.amazon.co.uk/Britax-Marathon-Convertible-Seat-Mariposa/dp/B000QE5BRW

thisisyesterday · 03/07/2012 23:03

k the radian does have a recline, but it isn't huge

the britax marathon does everything you want

oldraver · 03/07/2012 23:07

DS is just about to grow out of his Group 1. I know there are a couple of very expensive 5 points but really have given up hope. He is just under 18kg and even though he is 6 1/2 would still prefer his to be harnessed

bumbleymummy · 03/07/2012 23:07

The britax frontier 85 is available in the US. It has a weird isofix fitting though and is apparently illegal to use over here. I looked into it for DS1(6). I'm hoping that they'll bring it out in Europe before ds2 (3) grows out of his RF seat. He's quite small though so it should be a while. Maybe if enough of us harass them they'll hurry it along a bit! :)

hellymelly · 03/07/2012 23:08

Both my dds are in the britax two way- they are five and seven. The seven year old is very light for her age but tall, and is only now about to go into a ff booster seat, so the seats have lasted and the girls like them and find them comfortable.

bumbleymummy · 03/07/2012 23:09

Here it is.

uselesslife · 03/07/2012 23:13

Definitely not unreasonable
This drove me crazy
I put it off for so long.
DS was at the weight limit for ages

Afaik the 5point harness is just not tested at that weight
But I also think at that weight the harness would pull in a not very safe way. Iyswim?

I got the ferofix
Was disappointed in the recline, it basically stays in the recline position.
But DS sleeps really well in it
And he has been really safe with the belt.
And I was very concerned about it

uselesslife · 03/07/2012 23:15

There was a Concorde one that was my second choice isofix, didn't get around to checking it out though

cfc · 03/07/2012 23:18

Thank you all so much, definitely given me food for thought. Really like the idea if the us ones ESP as hubby forvever traveling there! Thanks again x

At Mamas & Papas, the Cybus Pallas 2 is a good compromise. It is fitted with seatbelt not Isofix but it looks like the belt secures the seat only, there is an impact cushion for the child. It is reclinable and a reasonable price.

WelliesinJune · 03/07/2012 23:38

Actually, it does have an Isofix. Problem solved?!

WelliesinJune · 03/07/2012 23:40

Cybex Pallas 2 Fix.

laraeo · 04/07/2012 00:36

You might want to look at the Graco Nautilus. Grace is much bigger here in the US but you can get it on amazon UK. We use it with LATCH which is our Isofix.

Links here

www.amazon.co.uk/Graco-Nautilus-Group-Car-Seat/dp/B00553Z3VI/ref=dp_return_1?ie=UTF8&n=59624031&s=baby

We have it. DS is 4.4 and @40lbs. He's still in the 5 point harness. It's very easy to install and adjust. DS sleeps in it without the recline - which isn't much but there is some. He loves having his own cup holder and stashes all kinds of stuff in the storage pockets.

I'd toyed with the idea of the Britax frontier but our previous seat was a Britax and I hated it.

HerRoyalNotness · 04/07/2012 01:18

Google foonf clek, it looks like it reclines and goes up to 29kg, covertible seat and narrow width

bumbleymummy · 04/07/2012 08:23

Lareao - that link suggests the harness is only suitable up to 18kgs. Have you checked that it has definitely been tested for a higher weight? If not, it may not perform in an accident.

bumbleymummy · 04/07/2012 08:23

It's good to see that more of these seats are appearing on the US market. Maybe Europe will bring something out soon.

cfc · 04/07/2012 09:29

I think the cushions are only up to 18kg, after that they covert to just seat belt across child.

I like the look of the Foo f thing, really fad. I wonder where the info is about harness weight...

I rang Britax's customer helpline about this and "fed back". DD is on the 98th centile for weight and height. She's been in an age 3 plus basic booster in my car since 2.5 as a result, she is in a five point harness with a Duo Plus in DH's car but is now 18kg and that needs to change. She's still not quite 3.

I suggest everyone on this thread feeds back to Britax / Maxi Cosi that there need to be more options for tall / heavier children. Girls on the 99.6th centile will reach 18kg at 2.5 according to the red book, and if you look at the red book that centile gap between the 98th and the 99.6th is massive - that's a lot of children uncatered for.

A lot of the car seats which go up higher with a 5 point harness still have to have the 5 point removed and replaced with a seat belt at 18kg, so you're not actually any better off.

uselesslife · 04/07/2012 09:53

It's a real hole in the market

LTJ- DS was like that, but he seemed to stay the same weight for a long time

laraeo · 04/07/2012 11:49

Looking at the Graco website, it says "with built in harness 20 to 65lbs, 27 to 52 inches" so DS is well within its tolerance.

I did see the amazon.co.uk site said less - I don't know why.

Longtalljosie · 04/07/2012 11:58

Yes, the same with us. She was just under 18kg at 2.5 and I was very worried - she was nowhere near ready for the next size up - but has crept up at snail's pace since then thank goodness

cfc · 04/07/2012 12:23

Just about to buy Graco Nautilus when I noticed the english 'version' at toys are us amazon.co.uk and halfords are all harness weight to either 15/18kg.

I think buying in USA and getting himself to bring it back is key. In the meantime...who knows?!

OP posts:
DrowninginDuplo · 04/07/2012 12:30

The conclusion I reached a year ago was, unless you fly to a scandavian country I buy one, no such thing exists. Ds2 (2.5 at the time) has been in a britax kidifix since then. I rang all sorts of people including the road safety bods, and the answer was the same over 18kg 3 point belt.

One problem with the USA ones is I read somewhere their safety standards aren't as high as eu/uk - not sure if this is true though.

thisisyesterday · 04/07/2012 12:45

The uk version of the Nautilus is not identical to the US version, so it isn't only that it hasn't been tested to higher weights, it isn't even the same seat underneath.

bumbley... they've been producing seats like this in the US for yonks, it's pretty standard over there I think. sadly the UK is yet to catch on, it's taken forever to get even a tiny range of ERF seats over here, and I think it will take just as long to get them to produce seats for a higher weight limit unfortunately.

the seat manufacturers just say "there is no demand"... well how would they know if they haven't tried sellign them?? Confused
