do all ERF seats have a leg?

We are planning to go ERF with our children (one so far) and currently searching out a new car. Many of the bigger cars seem to have a helpful storage box under the feet of the back passengers - which looks like a disaster for ERF. Are there ones without a leg or do we need to look at other cars?

Britax two way elite (I think) is secured with top tethers.

thisisyesterday · 23/06/2012 19:54

no, not all of them do. the britax 2 way elite doesn't...

and maye the brio zento? (will have to go and double check that though)

littleshinyone · 23/06/2012 19:54

we've got the britax 2 way elite, it's great. (no leg)

thisisyesterday · 23/06/2012 19:55

hmm, the zento doesn't appear to be readily available any more! maybe they stopped making it

You can buy fillers for the storage boxes - Volkswagen definitely do as DH found you could get them for our car (Caddy Maxi Life). Other manufacturers probably do too.

poocatcherchampion · 23/06/2012 20:22

this is very helpful thanks. Off to find out more about the Britax - but I think that is one of the well known ones?

also good news about the fillers, I was wondering about that. We will also have a maxi cosi on the go too with the base which also has the leg so will def have one leg, possibly in the middle of a car with 3 proper seats.

I have heard, but i can't remember where, so it may not be true... that some of the "fillers" are now not recommended for ERF seats, only for isofix infant carriers. because of the extra weight from an ERF

you'd have to ask the manufacturer about that though, and as I say, it may just be an unfounded rumour.

that said, what you want to prevent is the lid collapsing isn't it? so anything dense inside the box would work to do that, even if it hasn't been crash tested etc
i saw a recommendation to use a phone book for the purpose

OR, I do know a couple of people who managed to either miss the storage compartment by moving the seat back (if you get a car that you can do that on) or who have chosen a car seat with a foot prop long enough to reach into the bottom of the storage box

TruthSweet · 23/06/2012 20:53

Good point TIY, mind you the underside of the storage box lids look so reinforced I don't see the point of the filler tbh (ours have a network of plastic struts running all over it - barely a square cm of clear space under the lid!).

poocatcherchampion · 23/06/2012 21:26

oh this is very helpful!! I had thought about the phone book idea, but not the long leg idea. I think one will be a maxi cosi type arrangement.

I have the same problem. Apparently the besafe isi combi often misses box cos of the two prong support leg. Also there a new one which is good cos of leg. Will link it

Besafe have given their approval to fill the storage boxes with the manufacturers own in fill or polystyrene which you can buy from hardware stores.

You could also consider the Klippan Triofix, it has the support leg but the leg generally misses any storage box because the leg sits flush down the edge of the seat. have a look on securatots website www.securatot.co.uk for photos of the Klippan Triofix, they have some on the securatot facebook page too .... good luck :)
