extended rear facers- when did you turn your child around?

Got my 3.2 yo DD in a RF seat, very happily.

Wondering when we should turn her around. Due 2nd DC in Nov- she will be 3.8 , and thought that could be a good time.

We can also then move her to sit behind drivers seat and baby into her current spot behind passenger. RF seat wont fit behind drivers seat currently. Wont do it if its too early though.

Any experiences?

We moved DD1 to a front facer 2 weeks ago at 3.6 because she was outgrowing her seat - on the 97th centile. Like you we also had a little one to move up so DD2 1.4 is now in the big rear facer rather than her baby seat. They both seem to be loving the new way round. We left the smaller seat where it was as it wouldn't fit behind the driving seat, so now have DD1 behind driver facing forward, DD2 behind passenger facing back.

thanks jump.

I love RF. But the space it takes up is a bit of a pain!

My dd is 16 months and i already feel a bit sorry for her,she is constantly straining to look at us and seems bored and I think gets a bit car seat I know its for the best though.

Gingerbreadlatte · 25/05/2012 15:53

We found a mirror helpful for that, DD can see us and us see her.

If you meant car sick- that would be tricky.. For us, so far DD has been ok. Im rather emetophobic so not sure how I'd deal with that one vs safety feature!

DS gets car sick - as though a switch pressed at 3 yrs. He can be sick on the way to school (still - he's now 7). DS quite quickly began to recognise the feeling and had enough time to grab a bowl and use that. So we always travel with a bowl in the car. Its so much easier than stripping clothes off in a lay by at the side of the road. He can now be sick, we stop asap and sort things out (empty bowl, rinse out with some water and give ds a sip of water) and get back on our way quickly, without much distress (his or ours) and not have to wash the car seat, back seat etc....

Oh dear youd have loved my inccident the other week then,I cant describe how bad it was.I had to call my ds to come and hold her in the car whilst i drove home as the car seat was unusable.
I am still using the group 2 one rear facing bit im pretty sure she needs to turn around soon, now is the dilemma do i turn it around or fork out big bucks for a rf one.

ledkr · 25/05/2012 15:59

mistle dd1 is very sick too,i use stugeron as even if she is sick the nausea persists,i get it too,its terrible, worse than any pg sicknes ive ever had.

Gingerbreadlatte · 25/05/2012 16:01

Its good to hear positive car sick stories. :) That sounds very efficient. I am keen to know in general when kids know when they are going to vomit.
Ledkr- that sounds pretty nasty...

Re RF seat costs, we got ours from volvo. they sell the britax one that goes FF and RF at subsidised rate. Think it was under 160 a couple of years ago.

Can I thread hijack and ask if anyone has a non-isofix extended rear facer they no longer need to drop me a PM. We need a non-isofix for very, very occasional use, and having forked out over £600 for two isofix seats I'm loathe to spend more dosh on a seat that will be used 8-10 times over the next 3 years.

TruthSweet · 25/05/2012 22:07

DD1 was 4.2y (or thereabouts but def. over 4) and went ffing in her TWE.

DD2 was about 3.9y and then only because she had gastritis (so would vomit unexpectedly and it would cause pain). She is now 4.6y and is ffing in her TWE (was DD1's).

Not planning on turning DD3 until 4y unless there is something that necessitates an early switch.

age 4 for my LO and still going strong !! he is sat in an Axkid Kidzone and very happy (and very safe :) )

herecomesthsun · 01/06/2012 20:12

Ds is rearfacing in a TWE. He is 4y and 10 days Grin

Zimbah · 02/06/2012 21:02

I've just turned DD1 forward facing at 3.7y, simply because DD2 needs to move out of her baby seat (and into DD1's seat). We've decided we're happy to turn DD1 round now at this age. I have to say, she absolutely loves it. Although I'm finding it more tricky to do up her straps if we're in a tight parking spot, it's much easier rear facing.
