Hello everyone

Please can someone help? I'm trying to work out if a Maxi Coxi car seat would fit my 2001 VW Polo and can't find any websites that can help! The Britax website is really confusing but that is the only one I have found so far. And what is Isofix? Is that a 3rd thing I have to buy on top of car seat and base?! I thughtit was a safety standard but now I am really confused. (1st baby due in 1,5 months a just realised it's about time we bought this seat!!) many thanks

There's a link on the maxi cosi site where you can put in what car you have and it'll tell you if it fits. Britax site has something similar.

Isofix is a way of fitting the car seat. There are clips that you can attach the car seat to in the back of the car.

Maxi cosi do the isofix base which stays in the car, attached to the isofix brackets. WHen you put the car seat in the car you just drop it onto the base and it securly clips in place - no buggering about with seatbelts :)

...and yes, the maxi cosi seats will fit a Polo

Put your hand down the back of the rear seats, between the seat and the back. This is where the Isofix fittings are located. They are metal brackets. Hang on, I'll find a picture... about half way down this page.

Your car should have them but it's worth checking before you buy an Isofix seat or base.

VW def have isofix, both of ours do :)

If in doubt about fitting, pop into your local Mothercare or Halfords. They have trained seat fitters who will check that your seat is installed properly and safely. You don't have to buy from them.

I went to the maxi-cosi website, but it doesn't seem to list my car? It's a Renault Clio, but only a 3 door and pre 2009 (that's the earliest model they list). Presumably isofix would still work though?
Was hoping to buy all pram/car seat related stuff on a trip to a pram warehouse next weekend, but have just been put on bed rest Sad

Have you seen the TV programmes about shops, including Mothercare and Halfords, fitting seats incorrectly and giving wrong information to people buying seats? I'd go to a car seat specialist if you have any questions. Halfords and Mothercare do not have properly trained fitters so I would not advise going there unless you know what you want and are just buying to fit it yourself.

nancerama · 08/04/2012 20:13

nocake I was advised by ROSPA that Mothercare and Halfords were the best place to get seat fittings checked for safety. Am bothered now Sad

If they're trained, it's fine.. if they're not then you're better off fitting it yourself. That's the joy of isofix though - it's obvious once it's secure.

I accidentally fitted our carseat wrong recently. I know exactly how to do it, have done it many times, but was moving it between cars and cocked it up. Luckily DS wasn't in it :)

Read this, it's fairly damning of many large chain stores. There was a tv programme recently that looked at car seat advice and fitting and they found many stores, including Halfords, were fitting seats incorrectly. The staff at Halfords aren't trained properly for every seat they sell. It's much better to go to a small independent store.

It is worth noting that Britax will only allow their extended rear facing seats to be sold by trained people. Halfords aren't allowed to sell them...
