How old is your rear-facing child?

I thought this might be interesting for those considering rear-facing. I think it will show that kids can sit happily rear facing until X age. On a previous thread, some posters seemed to think you had to switch your car seat so hopefully this can show people that rear facing can be done for many years.

DS2 is 15 months and still happily rear-facing in his Maxi Cosi. He has tons of room left, both for his feet and his head, so I see no point in getting a new seat - he's about 24 pounds, I think, so that's ok for a Maxi Cosi, isn't it?

DS1 was out of his similar rear-facing seat at around a year (I think there was less foot room) and at that point, hardly anyone was talking about putting toddlers and older into rear-facing seats, so he got a Maxi Cosi Tobi. I'm tempted to get a larger rear-facing seat for DS2, but have no idea where to start.

DS1, on the other hand, has outgrown his Tobi really Blush - head well above the top of the headrest. What am I meant to be looking for now? He's 4.

DD is 13 months. Britax Two Way Elite- plan to keep her rear-facing until she is about 4 years, or too tall (she is about 99th centile for height).

thirdfromleft · 06/04/2012 21:47

Fantastic thread! We have switched ours round at 3 years.

I've read that everyone would be safer rear-facing, including adults (obviously excluding the driver Grin ) I wonder if that could be part of the future design of cars, with most passenger seats facing rear?

DD 2.3, in Besafe Izi Combi, v comfy

doctordwt · 07/04/2012 09:02

Forgot to say will continue to be in it for some time yet! She will rf until too big to do so.

MrsLionHeart · 07/04/2012 20:24

I may be a little late to post but...

DS1 is nearly 34 months and RF in a Britax Multitech (word to the wise, bought this from Volvo for about 100 GBP less than any other supplier!). He's quite a big boy, weighs at least 19 kg, so must stay RF in this until he outgrows it, otherwise would have to go into a FF with no harness. [buhmm]

DS2 turns 1 year this month, RF in a Britax First Class Plus, hopefully until older brother graduates to a booster. He's a little guy, so hopefully he can stay in it for a while yet.

2plus3 · 08/04/2012 22:34

My DD is 4.5 years, and still a happy rear facer, she is 15 kg so we hope to keep her rear facing for some time yet!
When we turned our son at 4 he did not like it, and complained that his view was poor and he had no where to put his feet!

yousankmybattleship · 08/04/2012 22:39

Can't remember exactly but mine were definitely all over three years old. Good idea for a post. I makes my stomach churn when you see people posting with babies under a year who want to put them forward facing.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 09/04/2012 21:29

my dd is 2yr8m and RF in a besafe izi combi x3 isofix. She'll stay in it til DC 2 needs it (due in the summer when DD is 3 so I suspect DD will be in the besafe til she's some way over 4yrs)

Not sure what we'll move her in to though as she's only 10kg at 2yr8m and looking on the charts in her red book she'll be 8yrs old before she's 18kg and officially too big for the besafe!

Mishy1234 · 10/04/2012 13:59

DS1 was rf until a couple of weeks ago (he turned 4 in feb). He could have stayed rf, but his brother (22 months) finally outgrew his infant car seat and needed to move up. DH has very long legs and we couldn't fit another rf seat behind the driver.

We have a Graco Duologic 2 in a BMW 5 series, BMW 1 series and a VW Polo. We will probably buy a Klippan Triofix for the 5 series to keep DS1 rf for longer (it's a roomier car than the others).

silverfrog · 10/04/2012 14:05

dd2 is 5.3, and is still RF in a BeSafe Izikid.

she will have to change this summer, though, as have dc3 arriving, and need to fit 3 seats in my car. am about to book an appt with In Car Safety to see what suits (suspect dd1 and dd2 will both need to change seats in order to fit a third one in). It may be the case that a TWE will fit for dd2, we'll see.

Will keep the Izikid for after dc3 outgrows their infant seat.

thisisyesterday · 11/04/2012 21:47

I have 2 rear-facing at the moment,

ds2 is 4yrs 6months (in a two way elite)
and ds3 is 2yrs 10months (in a besafe izi combi)

thisisyesterday · 11/04/2012 21:48

silverfrog, i foiund that it's easier to fit 3 in with 2 of them rear-facing than with forward facing ones!
pics on my profile :)

silverfrog · 11/04/2012 21:55

yes, it would be easier potentially. but it all depends on what fits on the car (HOnda CRV). a TWE is the likely candidate for the middle seat, but we will see if it fits given where dh/I have the front seat position (if needs be, dh can be relegated to just driving his car at weekends - no problem with space there, as huge people carrier type, with individual seats and isofix on all of them)

dd1 needs an extra harness to keep her safe, as she wriggles out form under seatbelts, so that is another consideration.

currently dd1 and dd2 are both in isofix seats, but that will have to change in all likelhood due to space.

one concern I have for 2 rf seats - how does the child get into the middle rf seat without climbing over another seat (with muddy/wet shoes for a good part of the year!) I can see poor dd1 ending up with a soaking wet seat whie dd2 clambers all over it having splashed through several puddles etc. Grin

I have an appt with the lovely ladies in Milton Keynes on friday, and hopefully they will come up with a solution. I am keen to keep dd2 rf, as she only weighs about 15.5kg, so I would rahter keep her in the lowest rated seat for that, ie where she is!

brafullofcrumbs · 11/04/2012 21:58

DS is 18mo and still RF in his baby car seat and still has plenty of room in it. I do wonder if I'll ever need to buy him another car seat at this rate... I'm looking at extended RF seats and am quite excited about getting one but DS just isn't growing out of his baby seat any time soon!

Rubirosa · 11/04/2012 22:02

My DS was also fine in his baby seat until 18 months - actually he is still well under the weight limit at 20 months but was getting a little tall. I am always a bit suprised to hear about 6, 7, 8, 9 month olds who have outgrown their baby seats Confused

Kirlyp · 11/04/2012 22:56

my little one is almost 4 years, he is tall (106 cm but only 16kgs) and just out grown the harness height in his Besafe iZi Combi but I want to keep him rear facing longer so have moved him into an Axkid Kidzone which will keep him rear facing until 25 kgs ! no complaints from him and a happy mummy too

my boy is almost 4 years old (16kgs but very tall at 106cm) and has been in his Besafe iZi Combi until now but he has just outgrown the harness height so I have switched to the Axkid Kidzone to keep him rear facing up to 25 kgs !

Kirlyp · 11/04/2012 23:11

sorry did not look as if first message posted !

StetsonsAreCool · 11/04/2012 23:14

DD still technically fits in her Cabriofix at 22mo. She's well under the weight limit and her head is only just reaching the top, but she can wriggle out of the straps, which is why we stopped using that at 19mo. It's a pain only having one car with a suitable car seat (DH's doesn't have isofix and the Besafe is isofix) but hopefully we'll be able to get a TWE soon to fix that problem.

Lucky13 · 20/04/2012 20:13

It's so good to hear of many others over 4 who are still RF. DD1 is 4.5 in her Izi Combi X2 Isofix. She says its really comfy and she has a great view. Although now there is starting to be a bit more peer pressure to change seat!

SnakebiteRattlinBoogaloo · 21/04/2012 15:10

My just turned 3yr old is Rear Facing in a Britax two way elite. I love it's tall shell. Ds is tall and skinny but still has another harness slot to go before he gets to the top and he has loads of shell above his head still. I'm hoping it'll last him until at least 4. If not longer.

Ds2 is 19months and Rear Facing in a Maxi Cosi mobi. I live this one too as it's easy to recline when he falls asleep and it's higher up so he can see out of the back window like his brother. He still doesn't need to cross his legs and has plenty of room left in it.

They love being able to wave to people out of the back window. Much more fun than looking at the back of mine or Dp's head and seeing hardly anything out of the side. Grin
