Protective Casing for Carseat When Flying

Hi

We are due to fly soon, and need to check the carseat in. It is too big to take with us and use on the plane on the plane seat (and it's RF anyway), so will have to go in the hold with all the other luggage. I am concerned about it getting bashed about - surely this is bad, and as bad as the seat being in a minor crash and therefore makes it less safe in a crash. Also concerned about it tumbling down the carousel belt slide! Are my fears unfounded? If not, is there a decent protective casing I can buy, and if so, pointers to where from, please!

We have the BeSafe iZi Combi X3 Isofix (rearward-facing Isofix).

Thanks.

Are you hiring a car at your destination? Could you not hire a seat along with the car and leave yours at home?

I am not aware of any protective casing I'm affraid. I too would be concerned about what damage could be done while being transported.

Thank for replying, morecoffee.
We are moving overseas!
I will try Halfords and/or Mothercare tomorrow, see of they have a sturdy cardboard box leftover from carseats sold, but still doesn't sound strong or sturdy enough.

The penultimate post here has me concerned!

Just read your link and was Shock but not suprised at what happened to that seat, that would be my worry. Will there be friends/ family to meet you when you get there? Maybe they could bring you a new seat for when you get off the plane? Just think of it as one of the many costs of moving. I'm not sure I would risk it tbh.

Good luck with the move by the way, sounds exciting! :)

Thank you! Am very excited. :) Just a bit frazzled about this car seat business.

Yes, worrying indeed, especially with the last post too!

Unless someone has any top solutions to my OP, I think we may ship the carseat ahead with our other stuff, and get trains to/from the airport. Though the removal firm could well be careless with it too. But I think it's more likely to get bashed about on the plane. What a hassle. They should have better policies at the airport for carseats.

Our car seats have flown all over the world and been fine. We wrap them in bubble wrap at the airport. Job done!

We moved abroad recently but bought a new carseat when we got here because it had to be approved in this country. Is yours universally approved? I have noticed that car seats here are a wee bit different to the one DS had in the UK.

But you don't know that they've not got internal damage, Annie. But I am glad you've not had any issues.

It should be, jen, we went for a high spec one.

My top of the range car seat was useless when we got to australia :(
Not approved.

Oh crikey. Where do I check? I think it should be ok, we are moving to Germany.

Was just going to ask where you were moving as they are not world wide. But uk seats are ok in the eu as they are eu seats. Friend took a eu seat back to Nz as they are legal there too

jenrendo · 29/03/2012 19:17

Yep, ours is high spec too and wasn't allowed in Canada. I had to donate it to my sister and it pained me as it was only 2 months old :)
