Should I put my son in a 2/3 group seat, he's 17kg?

Hi Just wanted your opinions on whether or not i should move my 2 1/2 yr old son from his group1 car seat to a group 2/3 seat. He is very big for his age and weighs 17kg. His head is approaching the top of his current Brittax Eclipse group1 seat and the belt seams a little off his shoulders, hes roughy(due to wrigglyitis) about 94cm tall. My initial thought was he was too big for it and that i would move him to a 1,2,3 group seat but after some investigation i found they only recommend to use the harness on these seats till 18kg aswell. Problem is I dont think he would stay in the seat with just the car belt over him and no crotch strap. Help?

I'd keep him in his seat until he is 18kgs or his eyes are in line with the top of the seat.

I can but its not going to be long before he reaches 18kg, I think before he's three, and then what do i do because the harnesses only go up to 18kg and hes going to get taller too?

we moved ds to a 2/3 seat when he was just under 3 as he was over 18kgs by then. We use a maxi cosi rodi xr - he never tried to undo the seatbelt

Thanks I'm more worried about him wriggling down through the car belt as he wont have a crotch strap, he has done this before with high chairs and push chairs so am always wary about it.

Try it. I was concerned too, when we moved our nearly-3 year old wriggler last year. He has been brilliant though, has never tried to escape.

Yeah looks like im going to have to do that, but im guna squeeze the last 1kg out of that brittax first though, unless he gets another couple of cm taller then i wont have a choice. Might get a couple months if im lucky ;)

we had to do exactly the same when DD was 2.2. she doesnt usually wriggleout of the strap unless the car is stopped. however she has now learnt how to unbuckle the belt because she can reach, so we will be upgrading to one that is more armchair style hopefully this will block her reach.

A friend of ours has this seat. It is harnessed up to 25kg and is taller than other seats dn fits it and he is 7yrs about 23kg and over 100cm (cant remember how tall exactly). Its a bit pricey but should fit your DS for a good few years untill he is ready/mature enough to use a hbb. This is exactly why friends got it, their dd was 18kg at 2.8yrs and no way would she have sat still enough to be trusted in a hbb. The seat is only available in uk from the place i have linked you to. They are realy helpfull though and will be able to give you good advice and may have fitted that seat in simmilar car to yours and so may know if it fits ok.

Two Way Elite is really the only option unless you will get a rear facing seat as there are a few that rf to 25kg (TWE is the only seat the rf OR ff to 25kg).

At 2y your child will just not have the capability to understand WHY they have to sit still, not wriggle, not pick up dropped toys or stand up or do any of the exciting things he can do normally at home but are very dangerous in a car driving on the road. This isn't a slur on your child at all just a comment on the brain development of children in general. Most 4y lack the capability to sit still (and I do mean still as if they aren't sitting perfectly in the booster it will not protect them properly in an accident) for 45 mins or more let alone a 2y and even then a 4y will have a better understanding that messing about in the seat might mean they get killed.

With a harness you, the parent, are in charge of their safety, with a high back booster you have to trust the child to be responsible at all times while in the car. A very big ask for a 2y, a 3y and even for some 4y.

Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear though Grin
