Well rated by 'Which?' would be good, I think (I can't afford a subscription, and used up my 'trial' one a couple of years ago Blush )

Size/price isn't a concern, just

  1. will it fit in our car (old Volvo V40) - shouldn't be a problem, I think

  2. is it really really safe for my pfb dc?

The Britax Adventure I saw recommended on another thread looks good, but I haven't much of a clue.

I have been impressed with Recaro seats. Great quality and side protection. Comfortable compared to the Britax we had too.

Seona1973 · 31/01/2012 09:32

maxi cosi rodi xr is good too

RamblingRosa · 31/01/2012 09:35

We have one www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_761759_langId_-1_categoryId_165554#tab1 and I think it's good. I remember checking it on Which at the time and I'm pretty sure it was a best buy.

Kiddy - Energy Pro
Which? score: 79%
Price: GBP169.00
Type: Belted installation only
The forward-facing Group 1 Kiddy Energy Pro is suitable for children weighing between nine and 18kg (approximately one- to four-years-old). It is secured using the adult seat belt and an impact shield to help spread the crash loads. Read the full review to find out how it faired in the Which? Child Car Seat tests.
This is an excellent child car seat, which fairs well in our front-end and side-impact collisions. The child is exposed to low loads as the impact shield does its job.

Kiddy - InfinityPro
Which? score: 78%
Price: GBP119.00
Type: Belted installation only
The Group 1, Kiddy Infinity Pro is forward-facing and is designed for use with children from 9kg to 18kg (approximately one to four years-old). Read the full review and watch the video to find out how it faired in the Which? Child Car Seat tests.
This child car seat is a Best Buy. The Infinity Pro's front crash rating is good, with the child well protected from the risk of serious injury. It does even better in the side crash, where this seat scores top marks for protecting the child.

Kiddy - Guardian Pro 2
Which? score: 78%
Price: GBP225.00
Type: Belted installation only
The Kiddy Guardian Pro 2 is a seat for Groups 1/2/3, and is designed to carry children from 9kg right up to 36kg (approximately one to twelve years old). It is secured using the adult seat belt, and you use an additional impact cushion for group 1 (for children weighing 9kg to 18kg, or about one to four years old). Read the full review to find out how it faired in the Which? child car seat tests when used as a Group 1 seat.
This child car seat is a Best Buy. Commonly, if a seat manufacturer tries to cover such a wide weight and age range, the design falls short in at least one area, but Kiddy seems to have really thought it through to make this design work across the range. It makes it a good choice if you have to transport children of different ages at different times. For example, it could suit grandparents with several grand children.

I have two Sunshine Kids Montereys for DD1 (one in DH's car and one for a spare). I absolutely love it - the side wings are adjustable as well as the seat back so a tall narrow child can still get good side impact protection as can a shorter wider child.

It fits with the back on children up to 150cm too so it won't be outgrown too soon (or before the 135cm height unless you have a child with freakishly short legs and the world's longest torso!).

Really good value too at around £60. It got a slating by Which? though as you can take the back off if you want, and guess what? when you take the back off the side impact protection isn't great (funny that, seeing as you have taken the side impact protection off!).

Mum2Luke · 01/02/2012 17:12

Do you mean the ones up to 11 years? I have 3 Graco ones which use the 3 point diagonal seatbelt and they are dead easy to put in.

The covers do come off for washing but I just sponge them down if the children get dirt on therm. If they had an accident I would take them off for washing, might be a pain though.

flossyfloo · 01/02/2012 17:29

I had to buy new car seats last week as we were in a car accident so needed 3 new high backed boosters. I went into Mothercare and the non-isofix seat they recommended was the Maxi Cosi Rodi Air Protect which they had on offer for £100, think it is normally £125. I was asking advice about all the different seats but she kept coming back to the Rodi and was saying it was really good quality and now they have the Air Protect model it is really safe.
The only one she would recommend over this was a Maxi Cosi isofix seat at about £175 iirc.

SaraBellumHertz · 01/02/2012 17:36

Phil and teds high back boosters- can be used with five point harness until about 4 yrs and with seatbelt thereafter

Tonksforthememories · 01/02/2012 17:43

I'll third the Recaro, I have the Young Sport (stage 1-2-3) for DS and i can't rate it highly enough. Paid £135 for it instead of the usual £180 ish. I've been through plenty of seats with the DDs and it's by far the best!

CountessOlenska · 01/02/2012 18:53

I like my Recaro one too, and so does my boy. No more car seat battles.

Blatherskite · 01/02/2012 19:04

I have the Kidfix SICT for my PFB DS. It can be fitted without the isofix. DS says it's really comfy and it did really well on the Which? tests.
