Re sitting in the back next to DC in car seat -

We have a DC aged 3 y 8m. Since he was a baby, if we go out as a family, we usually have one parent sitting in the back with him to keep him company/ make sure he is ok. We have DC2 due next month and will need 2 car seats, obvious place being both in the back of the car. We like rear facing and have a rear-facing Two Way elite in situ currently. It is going to be very difficult to squeeze a parent in the back past the car seats! I wondered whether anyone else has preferred having an adult with the children and whether you have managed to organise your car seats accordingly?

The only time I have sat in the back with DD is on the journey home from the hospital after she was born. And that was mainly because the car seat DH bought wasn't really suitable for newborns (he bought it because it said "from birth" but we all know that "from birth" doesn't actually mean that), and she looked like she was hanging out of it.

Other than that, if there's been an old person in the car with us, they've had the front seat so no choice but to sit in the back.

I'd say you're being a bit PFB, (or PSB now) and that you should take your seat in the front now. Grin

Grin at Shat - i like it Shatners Grin
(didn't even get the reference until You pointed it out... Wink )

blackoutthesun · 20/01/2012 12:17

my pfb has always been at the back since she was born

i need my leg room Grin

still not understanding the problem

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 20/01/2012 12:19

I must say I do always have an internal giggle at an adult sat in the back with their baby (and not as 'that's the only seat')

People must laugh at us, though, as DH sits in the back and baby in the front passanger seat (no airbag on that side) as the car is ancient 3-door and no carseats we tried fitted on the back seat.

Catsu · 20/01/2012 12:19

Omg I'm crying at 'shat' and at the main worry of OP being that PFB might hit baby with a hammer if she doesn't sit in back of car

Chandon · 20/01/2012 12:23

Actually, My DH used to sit in the back with PFB to catch PFB's vomit in a bowl, Grin as he vommed after 10 minutes EVERY car journey.

Then we had PSB, and we taught PFB to catch his own vomit in a bowl, and tell us to stop so we could wash the bowl out. Then PSb started getting sick too.

Then we gave up on travelling, really.

O my life is so glamorous Hmm

Hullygully · 20/01/2012 12:24

I missed the hammer...!

FWIW I always sat in the back with ds, but that was so I could bf him which is even worse and makes me need to go to prison at once.

Also dd but that was because she screamed ceaselessly "I'm stuck I'm stuck I'm stuck" for how ever many hours the journey lasted and it was dangerous for the driver to be driven utterly berserk and mental.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/01/2012 12:24

(weak with laughter here) OP, mix it up a bit - have one DC in the front and one in the back, or both DCs in the front if you want to stretch your legs. Grin.
In all seriousness, though, the hammer story is scary. Just make sure your DCs don't have a hammer or anything else weapony wiht them and you'll be fine.

pictish · 20/01/2012 12:26

Pmsl @ ShitnersBassoon! Grin

Op - you are very silly. Get in the front of the car like the adult you are, and cease the silliness.

NoMoreCakeOclock · 20/01/2012 12:27

Kids in the back, adults in the front.

OP you are finding a problem where there isn't one. Good luck with number two, it's lovely but you'll probably have less time to worry about stuff like this.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/01/2012 12:27

Honestly, you need to get them used to being in the back in their own! They will be fine. I honestly can't see what could possibly happen to cause them harm with you in the frontConfused

I imagine that most of the posters telling you not to worry and relax in the front seat have been through it like me, and frankly, can't see the harm in children having to entertain themselves in the back. All hammers removed obviouslyWink

We used to have a Vauxhall vectra and I could only fit one bum cheek between the car seatsHmm did it once when the tent took pride of place in the front seat.....never again.

Iggly · 20/01/2012 12:28

What's with the pfb threads today? Another OP has got pasted in AIBU about a chocolate Labrador/ferret at nursery Grin

Love it.

ClaimedByMe · 20/01/2012 12:28

It never crossed my mind to sit in the back with the dc

Iggly · 20/01/2012 12:28

And what was the uncle doing with a hammer?!

Hullygully · 20/01/2012 12:29

I've never liked that uncle.

pictish · 20/01/2012 12:31

I had to once or twice when the wee ones were little babies....as dh could not drive when they were screaming....but it honestly ever occurred to me to make it a regular thing. Sitting in the back sucks. I'm an adult and need the space in the front seat.
I quite like car journeys in a perverse way - we listen to music and the kids can't jump all over me.

ShatnersBassoon · 20/01/2012 12:33

I know that uncle. He turned out OK. Works in B&Q.

Hullygully · 20/01/2012 12:33

You made that up, didn't you Shat?

ShatnersBassoon · 20/01/2012 12:34

Yes, I shat it out of my imagination.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 20/01/2012 13:07

Oh the ferret thread is gooooood Grin

Op, check the backseat for ferrets before you strap 'em in.

And Labradors.
