Car seat where only lap-belts are fitted.

Hi,
My car only has lap-belts in the back and it had been working fine with the current car seat but the baby is now 3 and weighs about 15+kg and the current seat is getting quite uncomfortable and too small for him.
Any suggestions as to what I can do?
I don't want to (can't afford) get another car.
I really don't want him in the front as he would try to pull the gear stick etc.
Thanks

A Britax TWE can be installed with just a lap belt (rfing or ffing) up to 18kg or 25kg with a 3 point. They are big seats and will fit an average 5 year old at least. They are around £200.

Could you get 3-point belts installed? There are no boosters which are safe to be used with just a lap belt, unfortunately.

It's a VW Beetle... old style.... trying to investigate getting a 3 point belt installed but places seem to be reluctant to do it.
It's amazing it even has lapbelts as many don't even have that.... in some ways that would be simpler as he's not required to sit in a car seat if no lap belts are fitted, however, that is not the responsible way to look at it and unfortunately I need to look at the options available to me now... I want him securely tied in, mainly to prevent escape as I don't want him loose in the back...
I'll check out the Britax seat....
Actually tried to contact some of the companies and they are trying to make me feel like a bad mother for having a car with only the lap belts.... I had no baby when I bought the car and they aren't offering me a replacement car....

we had our DS in the front in our Beetle - have you been on the VW forums to get some advice for where to go for your 3 point? Can be very easily done Smile we have morris minors now and just about to fit them in the back of that

He can stay in his group 1 till he's 18kg or his eyes are level with the top of the seat. He's much safer harnessed and it better the seat be snug as it'll absorb more of the energy in an impact. As for going with a high back booster when he's completely outgrown the group 1 - it'll have to be fitted with a 3 point seatbelt so he's technically safer in the front with a 3-point seatbelt than he would be on a booster with a lapbelt, if you had a crash with him lapbelted onto a booster he'd just jacknife and wouldn't stand a chance to be honest :(
