Car seat that fits 30 year old Peugeot 205

Hi all. Has anyone by any chance had to fit a car seat (Group 1 size) in an old Peugeot 205 from the mid 1980s? The seat belts in the back seat are a different design than in a new car - to be precise, the clasp is not down at seat level but rather on a strap that comes up four or five inches, so even though they are retractable, effectively there's a small section that's not. So every car seat we've tried wobbles about when you connect the seat belt through it. Obviously there's no isofix either...

So if anyone already knows a make and model that does work in this situation, any tips would be gratefully received! It's for my mother-in-law's car.

Thanks!!

I would ask her to take the car to somewhere like halfords/mothercare or any independant shop so they can fit one there and see what is best.

The problem your having is buckle crunch. What weight is the child? The only seats that will likely fit your car are: (In order of expense)

Britax First Class, fitted with alternate routing - £109.99 when reserved online at Halfords

Cybex Pallas impact sheild seat - £149.99-ish

Kiddy guardian pro impact sheild seat - £165-ish (depends on retailer)

Maxi Cosi Tobi - £175-ish

Have you heard of extended rear facing? Kids are 5x safer when rearfacing. As your MIL's car won't have a front airbag it is possible to go for one of these extended rearfacing seats and fit it in the front with the child rear facing. Take a look at rearfacing website

Good Luck!

i was about to say, the britax first class - it has an alternate seatbelt routing that works with long seatbelt stalks (have elderly car myself!)

or as above, the kiddy seats

hi, i was going to say too that you may get buckle crunch and recommend the britax two way elite. it has an alternative route for buckle crunch and can be fitted using a 2 or 3 point seat belt. i would call either the in car safety centre or the essex road safety team and ask them if they have ever fitted it in your car type or what seat they would recommend.

What about creating your own isofix? My parents did this with their car when my sister and I were small in the 70s and .80s. The garage fixed the seats to the car chassis.

Thanks for all those suggestions! I think we'll check out the Britax as the other granny has that in her car so we could just test it out on the Peugeot before we buy one. Isofix idea is a good one but the garage my mother-in-law took the car to said they wouldn't do it - liability issues, they said!

Also with doing your own ISOfix older car chassis aren't 'strong enough' to have isofix installed >:-( I wanted it in my Nissan Micra but not allowed
