I have just bought a new Recaro car seat for my DS to replace his maxi cosi priori (which he broke Angry ). We have had the new one less than 2 weeks and he has learnt how to unclip the harness, i rang halfords thinking that the clip must be faulty (as it's so easy!!), the guy there has told me that it needs to be that easy to undo in case we have an accident! is this right? surely it should at least be a little stiff (like the old maxi cosi) or more fiddly? he is 2.4 years! i have really told him off today(i considered tapping his hand at one point :( ), but he just see this all as a game and all the more reason for doing it!! todays school run has been a nightmare i had to pull over 5 times, on the way home :(.

It's a shame that using duct tape on a child's hands is classed as cruelty. Tape them to the sidesof the seat and no fiddling!Wink

whomovedmychocolate · 29/06/2011 21:03

There is no law against duct taping children down for their own safety as it happens.

SecretNutellaFix · 29/06/2011 21:08

I take it you've been tempted the WMMC?

3cutedarlings · 29/06/2011 21:08

That its then tis "sorted" Grin i shall just purchase it in bulk!!

actually its an ongoing joke with my father, when ever he sees any of my DC's playing up......his motto is always "i have a roll of gaffa tape you can borrow, if you need it" Grin

I'm tempted to invest in some for my mother now my nephew is becoming mobile. She's not as fast as she was and he's cheeky and curious and going to be A Little Sod. Grin He's only 8 months too.

pommedechocolat · 29/06/2011 21:21

I have a recaro and it takes quite a lot of pushing to get it open. I would be shocked if a 2 yr old could open it.
Sounds faulty to me.

3cutedarlings · 29/06/2011 21:22

Is it the same one i linked?

Thing is WMMC i would do just the same, but im now worried, if it unfastens with just 2 toddler thumbs, then how well would it perform on a full head on collision? im possibly over thinking it, but its no good if ive lost faith in it.

I think yours is bust my dear. However you have there what is known as a small version Houdini you can solve the car seat problem but you need to be ready for his next leap into the unknown (possibly quite literally). Grin

whomovedmychocolate · 29/06/2011 21:47

Caught mine sitting on the worktop (still not figured out how he got up - no drawers) using a 12 inch bread knife from the knife block to saw open a coveted packet of crisps he'd spotted. Hmm (He's nearly three now, he's smart and fast.)

3cutedarlings · 29/06/2011 22:12

hahaha lol i am so glad i posted its has been a while since ive been on, not just for the reasurance regarding the car seat, but its also nice to know that my DS is not the only little fecker out there Grin WMMC that is so something my DS would do, a few times he has managed to get the veg knife, while ive and my back turned for nanno seconds! Hmm and i mean seconds!! i have litrally turned round to get a plate or something of the drainer!!

3cutedarlings - I did a little emergency stop and he slipped out of the car seat. It really frightened him and I explained it it would be worse if a car hit me. He was Sad but I also now let him undo the car seat when the engine has stopped and when I say he can. So he feels grown up and I am in control.

ds1 undid the clip on the britac isofix on a motorway when I was hurtling along. We were alone and I had to pull onto the hardshoulder - he never did it again - not sure who was more scared!!!!

StyleandBooty · 30/06/2011 11:47

My dd could undo her Maxi Cosi Priorifix at well under three - it was terrifying. Nothing I could do or say dissuaded her. I would be driving along a dual carriageway and find her climbing into the front with me. Because she was levering straight downwards with her thumbs, she was able to exert quite a bit of pressure - she found it easier to undo than I did.

I moved her early to a seatbelt fastened chair eventually - against advice on here - and because she felt so grown-up she has NEVER unfastened it until we've stopped. I did make sure the seatbelt geometry was correct. She was about two pounds underweight for the seat, but well into the height requirement. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when she was finally the right weight.

I know a 5-point harness is safer, and better for as long as the height and weight are within range - but not when it's undone.

3cutedarlings · 30/06/2011 12:35

Well took DS off to halfords this AM, i tryed him in several different seats, and he could undo all of them :(, i didnt even get them to check mine, after fastening opening every car seat they had in there i can tell that the tension on ours is fine, its just my DS that is a little sod!! in saying this he hasnt tried to undo it at all this morning, so maybe i did scare him out of it yesterday. Failing that i shall either try and seek out sort on anti tamper device (not ideal i know) or we shall have to buy one with and impact shield!!! although tbh my favoured idea atm is duct tape ;)

I think the anti-tamper devices have been made illegal now, in case they impede swift removal of child during accident, fire, etc.

there was a lady a while ago who had a cybex pallas car seat (one of the impact cushion ones) and her lo could reach over enough to unclip it, so tbh spending £180-£200 on another carseat may not solve your problem :(

BertieBotts · 10/07/2011 16:08

Wasn't that child much older though, sazm, or very tall or something? DS is 2.9 and there's no way he could reach his arms around to the seatbelt in his kiddy seat.

I think if a seatbelt cover would invalidate insurance then an anti tamper device probably would as well.
